An Apprentice No More [Self]

Celest, Anthro

Graduation day! The celebration would be minor. A congratulations from her master, and a small gathering of her closest friends. Everyone was there, Tino, Margine, and Emephret. Her master said a few final words, granting her the official title of Shaman Adept. In the modern, civilized world this title meant little, but in realms dominated by nature it meant everything. Earth Mother, Healer, Guardian, Teacher, it was all of these things, and more. It was time for her to leave her Master's cave, and find a new place to call home. But first, it was time to celebrate.

Her master smiled as he looked down on her, then turned to his cave for a long desired rest. Celest strolled over to where her friends awaited, near Margine's tree. She knelt down and petted the bright pink and purple flower. At her presence the flower bloomed and began to glow a yellowish green light. She smiled in return. Margine has lived under the Willow tree, near the cave for as long as Celest could remember. She was a rare flower, one of a kind. While she has never had a conversation with the flower, their bond was strong, and crossed the lines of the material world, into the realm of the spirit.

Tino and Emephret

Celest began setting out the wooden plates and began setting out the food for her companions. Tino, the Icthysaur, surfaced from his pool of water near Margine. He was a friend of hers since he was just a hatchling. He made a happy croaking sound as she placed a large fish on his plate. He made a dash for the fish, but before he could snatch it Celest booped his nose.

"Tino, that was rude. You must wait for all of our plates to be set."

Tino quickly slid back, just under the surface of the water, and gave and apologetic stare. Celest then turned to  see Emephret happily waiting for his plate to be filled. He set one paw on her arm, and leaned up to kiss her cheek. She smiled, and set a fat, beheaded snake down on his plate. He bounded back and forth, snakes were his favorite.

Margine received a plate as well, but this was only to make sure she didn't feel left out. Celest reached inside her bag and pulled out a small vial. Inside the vial was a bit of honey. She poured a few drops of honey in front of Margine. The little flower's glow changed from yellow green, to a full golden glow, like sunbeams shining through a honey jar.

Celest sat now, cross-legged with her companions. the morning sun gleaming on her face. She pulled the freshly baked bread from her bag, and spread what was left of the honey on a big slice. There she sat, quietly with her friends.

Only Celest would be leaving on her journey, and with this thought tears began to fill her eyes. The sweet taste of the honey bread reminded her that it would be alright in the end, that this was not goodbye, only a goodbye for now.

She watched as Emephret wrestled with his food. Swinging it about playfully. Tino had already devoured his fish, and was slowly sinking back into the pool of water, sleeping happily. Margine still glowed merrily.

After her meal with her friends she gathered her leaf green bag and began to pack for her journey. She walked past the mouth of the cave and stepped up onto a log that fell many years ago. This makeshift bridge led to another firm patch of earth. Hear, stood a massive hollow tree. It's branches still covered in leaves, and wood still strong and full of life. Celest called this tree home since she was just a pup.

She walked through the wood bead curtain that covered the opening to her hollow. The room smelled of lavender and wood, and the sun shined in through a hole higher in the tree. She took a long look over her room, it felt empty even though she hadn't left yet. The old musty books that once covered the table were stacked neatly on the shelf. Her herb bench was organized and clean. The bed was made, and the hollow as a whole was tidy. She walked to the table and began packing her bag with the items she had prepared the previous day.

The first item to go in her bag was a lock box given to her by her master. The wooden box felt as strong as steel. It's pitch black wood, and silver trimming shimmered in the light. The lock itself could only be opened by those who knew how to speak the proper words. She spoke to it in a secret language, only used now by shamans to channel their intent, and focus their magic.

She whispered, "Unhinge and Open."

As she spoke the words, the wood changed colour for only a moment, to a midnight purple and green. Like a reflection in the wood the colours flashed as the lid opened. The box contained currency from every part of the world. It was ancient, but likely still good for use as actual currency. She was glad she had a bit of security when heading out into the unknown, it would be interesting to learn how to actually use currency. She had never had the need for it before.

She rummaged through the box and pulled out a small sapphire necklace. It gleamed in the sunlight from the window. It's dark green tinted silver chain fit snugly around her neck. This amulet was crafted in the first days of her training. Under her teacher's tutelage she enchanted the gem with old magic. The amulet caused the bearer to be extremely light of foot. She could walk through thick mud, and dense vegetation without concern of becoming stuck or entangled. The energy it's creation took was immense, and she had been exhausted even weeks later. She donned the amulet, and with a hum of energy, she knew it's power was working. The soft earth beneath her feet felt firm and smooth.

She reached into her small wardrobe and pulled out some neatly folded clothes. The clothes were not suitable to the swamp, and so were barely worn. They were given to her when she was a young girl, before she left for the swamp. Celest unfolded them gently and spread the several shirts, pants and dresses out on her bed. All of them were much too small for her.

She turned again to her desk and reached down to retrieve a bone needle, and a spool of dark green thread. There was a sharp knife hidden on the top of her desk under some fabric she had made months earlier. Most of the time she had no need for clothing. Her bright blue and green fur was more than modest compared to most creatures of the swamp.

Sitting on the bed she took the first shirt on her right and cut the length up the arms from wrist to shoulder. She sewed the additions to the clothes on the bed. Adding fabric in appealing places that also made the clothing more suitable for an adult. What she created after three hours time was unique, and not at all fashionable. Some of the clothing was now a little too big, but it served it's purpose. Celest was proud of her work, the yellow green and purple dress was her favorite.

Not expecting for the clothing to take so long to put together, she hurriedly packed away the remaining travel items. A bar of soap, an old cloak he master had given her when she came of adulthood, a fishing rod, and various odds and ends that would make life on the road a little easier.

She threw the cloak over her shoulders, and pulled the strap of her bag over her head, letting it rest at her side. She reached for her walking stick, and her Akubra, a hat worn by her father.

She stepped out from her hovel in the tree into the midday sunlight. She turned and locked her door, then took several steps back. She bowed her head and rested her staff on her shoulder. Raising her arms into the sky, sunbeams gathered in her hands. The energy stayed and glowed in her palms. It glowed brighter the longer her hand were in the air, she began to chant a melodic tune.

Slowly she knelt to the ground. She brought her hands down in front of her, resting them there on a soft patch of wet dirt. The Sunlight sank into the mound, and two sprouts immediately burst out from the ground. They grew tall and wide, bright green vines  spread out around her house. Soon the entire tree was surrounded by thick overgrown vines. She pulled the bone needle from her hand and pricked her finger. When she let the drop of blood fall at the base of the vines, thorns began to sprout all over the vines.

Celest nodded with satisfaction, the tree simply looked like a tree covered with vines, and thorny ones at that. She was certain it was enough to protect her home while she was away. She had a blood link with the plant too now, she would be able to sense when the plant was in danger, or if something has pricked itself on  one of the vines needles.

She stood up and shook the dirt from her knees. Her hands still tingled from the sun beams that danced in her hands only moments ago. Before leaving, she gave each of her friends a kiss good bye, and left her master a token of her appreciation. She set a small blue pebble down on a stump nearby his cave. The pebble was part of his first lesson.

She thought back to the first day she arrived here, at his cave.

The journey had been arduous. She started out from her parent's home, and left with three escorts. These three men were trustworthy, but not as skilled guardsmen as they claimed to be. The first fell to illness, and the other two died shortly after entering the swamp. The swamps were a dangerous place for the toughest of warriors, and was triply so for a girl on her own who knew nothing of the world.

She continued through the swamps that first night, terrified, alone. The further she went the darker it became as the tree canopy smothered the light from the stars. A loud "thunk" sound off one of the trees above her startled her so much that she leaped several feet into the air. She landed hard on a large stone with her foot and bruised her heel. Though no further harm came to her that night.
