"Naaah. I've seen vampires," Freezair said. "You don't wanna KNOW about one of the worlds I ended up in. I'd say... he's more 'geek who needs to get outside more.'"

"And besides, Curehtas has been eating garlic pizza. Surely his breath would wilt him if he was...?" Tiamazu said.

"Ha ha. Very funny," Curt replied. Then, to Kyo: "Erm... It's not THAT bad, is it?"

"Do you need a hand up?" Freezair asked the boy.

[Daaa! Bad Extinctionists! Die! No hurting innocent animals!]

"Yes, let's all chill," said Tono, as soon as Freezair mentioned that. Nin rolled her eyes.

"Well, then, I guess the reason he hasn't said anything is that he's freaked out. How often do you see giant talking birds in other worlds? Or goats that leave ice in their wake? Or human-formed robots?" commented Sta.

Gray tuned out his words, turning to the human. Unrealizingly [is that a word?], her tail grew out and began to twitch back and forth. Vampire or not, this human still creeped her out.

((What I found slightly more jarring was the fact that, 8 years in the past, people were wandering around with iPods. While I can accept AF happening in the future somewhat, the fact that there were no iPods when the first book was written still rubs me weird ways.))

Zaedia, tactless as ever, hopped on over to the boy. She peered down into his face.

"Hey. You. Kid. Get up," she snipped at him. "You're in the middle of the walkway."

"Zaedia!" Kyo said. "Be nice!"

"Is she ever..." Tiamazu asked herself privately.

Freezair tried to put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "C'mon. Upsy-daisy," she said, and she tried to yank him upward. "We're REALLY sorry about this..." she started apologizing.

"Well. Maybe we should...HOLY PLUCKED CHICKENS," screeched Tono. Pointing at the air, he commented, "Portal's closed. Now what?"

"We...re-open it?" suggested Gray. "Then again, I don't know how to feel for the right world."

[Freezair]

"Uh-oh," Freezair said. She pushed the boy to a sit, throwing him over the table.

"Uh... We may have a problem," Kyo said. "Errm... Uh... Well!" she said brightly to their young visitor. "Whatcher name, kid?"

Artemis had already been a little freaked out by falling into someone else's living room, although not too freaked out. After all, he had seen some weird things in his time.

"Ah..." He paused, wondering how much information to give them.

"Oh, for crying out loud! Do we need to look at your underwear name tags?" demanded Tono. [Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww.]

"No thanks," replied Nin.

Kyhorlet smacked her right fist into her left palm. "Hey. Want me to rough him up a bit and see if that'll make him talk?"

Freezair put up a hand to stay Kyo. "Uh... Thanks, Kyo, but I don't think that'll be necessary," she said. "He's probably in shock or something."

Tiamazu slithered through the air, sticking her pointed snout in the boy's face. "Excuse me, sir, but we really do need to know who you are," she said. "We have to help you get home!"

Curt whispered to Zaedia, "I don't think Kyo could do any good. His head already seems pretty rattled to me."

Artemis looked the...rather unusual...creature in the eye. Well, these people didn't seem that bad...and it was true he needed help getting back home.

"Artemis Fowl the Second. Although I don't quite get how that well help, or how I got here in the first place."

"Accident," replied Gray, examining a fingernail. "Pure accident."

[Freezair]

"Artemis?" asked Freezair, her eyebrows cocked.

"So?" Curt said.

"Let me put it this way," she said. "Imagine if his name was 'Kyanlet...'"

Kyohorlet snnneerked. "But that's a girl's name," she said.

"Exactly. In my world--"

Tiamazu cut in. "Yes! Yes. I've studied the Greek mythology of your world... Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and the moon." She spiraled around his head. "Well... He's pale enough to be the moon, I suppose. At least they didn't name him 'Selene.'"

"Better'n Alice, I suppose," Zaedia huffed.

Artemis wondered why everyone liked to comment on his name. He'd heard variations of that speech many times, although this was the first time someone had tried to justify it.

"The Second?" asked Terra, tilting her head. "Is your father named Artemis as well? Or is that your mother?"

Tono snorted. If that kid's father was named Artemis as well, he was going to die laughing.

((Only tangentally related, but I remember having an RP character many ages ago who was named after her grandfather. I wish I could remember her name... I think it was something like Morgan, or something similarly gender-neutral.))

"Well, Artemis," Freezair said, trying to be civil, "my name is Freezair Mistfield SilverEye. The First and Only. Since I picked the name myself."

"When you were 13," Zaedia cut in.

"...Which... explains a lot," Freezair admitted.

"But we wouldn't have you any other way," Curt said. "And me. I'm Curehtas. Just Curehtas. Curt'll do."

"Kyhorlet. Kyo."

"Tiamazu."

Zaedia was quiet.

Freezair nudged her with an elbow. "And. Ms. Grumpypants here is Zaedia."

"My name is Gurei-Shishi-Guru. But call me Gray," said Gray. Her old name was long past, only a formality these days.

"My name is Tono, and this is my mate Coco and my sister Nin," said Tono, gesturing behind him. Both females whumped him.

"We can talk!" snapped Coco.

"I'm Sta..." said Sta.

"And I'm Terra."

"Well," said Artemis, leaning back in the chair. "What exactly is this world called? And may I ask what sort of creatures you are?"

[Freezair]

"This is the world of Evelon," Tiamazu said. "And I am a Seawinder. My friends Kyo and Curt are Guardians, and Zaedia is a Matches. And Freezair is a human. Are you human, or are you something else?"

"He looks pretty human," Freezair shrugged.

"But so do we," Kyohorlet said. "Well, 'cept for the pointy ears..."

"Yes, I'm a human," said Artemis. He turned to look at Gray. "Are you human as well?"

"Nah," she muttered, flicking her tail into view. "See? I'm a griffin shapeshifter, but I usually take human form for ease of moving around. Tono and Nin are both Garudors, Coco is a Polly-"

"I thought Polly was the name of a parrot."

"Well, it's a species name here. Sta is an Aries, and Terra here is a Khalmar."

"No, I'm not human either," said Terra with a slight grin. "This is only my human form, which I tend to use. It doesn't freak people out as much."

"I'd like to see your...usual form then," replied Artemis, leaning his head against the arm of the chair.

"Alright," replied Terra, and began to shimmer. For a moment, no one could see what was going on, then a giant metallic squid was sitting in her place.

"Ooh," said Artemis, his eyes lighting up.
