Liked & Disliked Themes & Concepts

Postby Silverin » 08/30/2015 11:15 AM

Another thing where I am just looking for information from the user base.

This is not about actual new pets but about the themes and concepts behind seasonal and event pet coloration and edits.

What do you guys like? Seriously though. XD

Again no bashing please :l

This is about your likes and dislikes not ripping up someone else's ideas and opinions.
Just say you don't like that particular theme and leave it at that.
You do not have to say exactly why you like or dislike something in this case.

Also please avoid mention any previous coloration and edits in specific
unless your using it as an example in a positive way.

Do you like things based on animal coloration? Tech/cyber? Celestial? Tribal?

Do you dislike celestial? Do you dislike some of the more natural pets? Dislike stuff that are too Easter or Christmas? Things that are not as flexible character wise?

Do you like or dislike major edits? What sort of major edits are you interested in seeing? Since the demi pets are now normal pets what are you interested in with them? Would you like to see a particular type of edit on a particular pet?

Maybe you like fandom things? Or maybe you hate them.

Who really knows outside of you guys.

Again I will keep a tally of things and add to it as people mention things c:

Re: Liked & Disliked Themes & Concepts

Oooh boy! I love these things.

Favorite concepts... Well, I'm a total Christmas whore, so I love all the Christmassy pets, or even those themed on other holidays. I especially like candy-and-sweets themed ones like the Gingerbread Tricky and such. I've always liked the fact that the Teigu species has these, although I do think it's sort of bad that the Teigu seems to be the exclusively candy-themed pet. I think it'd be nice if they branched out into other themes, or if they had different patterns to do with their different candy themes? Like the Bubblegum Teigu. That was a good idea right there.

I also love ANYTHING starry-themed, so any celestial stuff--be it using the nebula pattern we call "celestial" or be it space-themed in other ways--is gonna be a huge hit with me. Plus, they tend towards my favorite colors (soft blues) which makes me like them even more! My favorite starry pets are the Mooncheeck and Astria Florana.

As for other concepts... I like most Halloween/spooky pets as long as they're not overly gory or "serial killer-y." That's just a concept I have a hard time working with, because I dislike assassin/killer-type characters the vast majority of the time, so I don't have much use for a pet whose appearance sort of locks them into that type. Like the Mad Meji, for example. I'm also not a super big fan of the Corpse Kuhna/Undead Bandoll because the bloodstains look sort of superfluous. I think it's easy to "overdo" horror pets like that. However, if they're done with more subtlety, I like them. (Although the Sanguine Kuhna is an exception to this--because it's more "liquidy," I think it looks awesome.) The horror pets I like most are the Decayed Fenling, Insonia, Imp Shinzo, and Fiend Honeydew.

As for the concepts I DON'T like, I don't like "fan-themed" pets when they're overdone. Obviously, a lot of people love making cosplay pets, and I'd be a pretty huge hypocrite if I had a problem with that. :P But when they become a full species, if they're too obvious, it feels really limiting, and it can be off-putting if you're not a fan of whatever it is. I think the Castle Seraphant is an example of these kinds of pets done well--their color scheme and design aren't too limiting and looks good on its own. The Sweetodd Dalma is borderline, since you could just interpret it as a design resembling fancy clothes, but it definitely feels more like it has to "mean" something. And I think those Sonic-themed pets from a while back were an example of it gone too far. They were so obvious what they were, and that made them feel a little restrictive.

Most other themes, I don't have opinions on.

I'm so cool (too bad I'm a loser).
I'm so smart (too bad I can't get anything figured out)!
I'm so brave (too bad I'm a baby).
I'm so fly
That's probably why it feels just like I'm falling for the first time!

I'm so green (it's really amazing).
I'm so clean (too bad I can't get all the dirt off of me)!
I'm so sane (It's driving me crazy)!
It's so strange
I can't believe I'm falling for the first time!

Right off the top of my head...

I absolutely adore pretty much any pets done up in natural/existing animal themes. While I'm less of a fan of those super common ones (ie jaguars, leopard, zebra, the like), I am deeply in love with all of the lesser known species that are made. I find exotic bird themes the most inspirational.

I'm not the biggest fan of your typical 'Christmas colored' pets; I love winter-themed ones but overdone red/green/white combos don't usually resonate with me. Likewise I'm not the biggest fan of overly bloodied Halloween pets, much like Freezair has already stated. I loveloveLOVE Halloween everything...but too much gore can kill a potential character idea for me. Just plain evil/demonic/spooky? Go for it!

Likewise, I agree with disliking fandom pets as a whole species. It's awesome when one person can take a favorite character and interpret them how they see fit...but I dislike doing that to an entire species. I think that belongs in custom orders personally. I don't mind taking fandom concepts to make a species out of--the Sweetodd Dalma is pushing it a little but it's not so specific I find them limiting.

I'm sure I'll be back when I feel less frazzled.
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

As much as a reeeally love the cosplay pets that come out, just because they're fun collectibles, I have to agree with everyone in saying that they're nearly impossible to pin characters to, unless you just RP them as who/what they're based off of. Like, I like them, but I agree they're hard to RP. x'D

I too love naturey things (especially ice/snow themed things or lightning themed things; I like elemental stuff!), and I LOOOVE star/space themed things, even though I can't always think of characters for them. I also love things based on folklore of places, or monsters or the like. Pets with super Christmasy things don't jive with me just because I feel like they have to have Christmas somewhere in their character, if they're gingerbread or santa-esque or just downright red and green. But I do think they're very cute, so I wouldn't say I dislike it or want it to change at all; that's just my own personal preference lolol I think it's fun to have Christmas-themed pets at Christmastime.

I also don't really love pets that are super gorey or bloody simply because it's hard to look at them long enough to think of a character for me (I'm majorly squeamish ahah). Exceptions would be the Sanguine kuhna (they just look heckin cool), Kirunds (exposed bones are okay, but once they're bloody / gorey I get squick), Bandol (so cartoony it doesn't matter lolol), Corpse Kuhna (I just like how these look honestly?), and Jaager (again lack of blood makes them so okay for me lololol). But then again, some blood is totally fine? I'm not sure where I draw the line, and as said before, I'm not sure if anything at all needs to change because if I don't like a pet, I can simply refrain from obtaining one, you know? xD I don't really think it needs to be controlled.

But there will come a time
You'll see, with no more tears
And love will not break your heart
But dismiss your fears
Get over your hill and see
What you find there
With grace in your heart
And flowers in your hair

Personally I don't think the cosplay pets are that restrictive, especially since most of them are just based on the color scheme with minor edits. However I'm not particularly enamored of any of them either, so I guess my opinion on them is more neutral.

I also really like starry/celestial pets, especially ones with gradients. I also prefer them to have dark colors most of the time, mainly because that makes the pattern stand out more.

Recently, I've also started being interested in pets with vine patterns/floral themes.

About cosplay pets, I pretty much have the same opinion as GrayGriffin up there. They're not that restrictive for me (honestly for a lot of them I don't even realize they're cosplay pets until much later because Aurora References). Besides, it's fun for me to see them pop up every now and then, because it's fun for me to see the creative way the artist was able was link the cosplay to Evelon.

Christmas pets; hmm, a little iffy for me. I'm a big holiday person, especially Christmas and Halloween, but for a lot of the pets I don't really get the Christmas vibe. I'm not saying that we need to go all green and red for every single pet (because noooo) but I definitely found myself more excited about seeing the Cocoa Brumas and Peppermint Nagis than maybe the Beach Fenling? Not that the Beach Fenling isn't cute as hell, but it really didn't strike me as the festive Christmas pet I was hoping for.

Halloween pets; I think I'll have the unpopular opinion on here that I love the more gory/serial killer pets XD. I don't know, it's just hard finding characters on 'Wildlife' site that fit some of my less than savory characters. And I definitely think you guys do a great job of finding a balance between the more 'scary' pets than the ones that are just dressed up for Halloween. I was a huge fan of the Corpse Kuhna ((<< and actively trying to get my hands on one of those still)). One little critique, like I said I lean more towards themed pets for the Holidays!

For celestial pets, again I agree with Gray in that I love the celestial/gradients on top of dark backgrounds. They just look so beautiful.

And yes to more demi pets!

What I meant by Christmas pets was more the theme not what pets came out each christmas c: Since the beach fenling was not actually Christmas themed. It was beach themed as were pretty much every other Christmas pet last year save for maybe three I think.

Folks said they enjoyed the beach theme so I wanted to know what other things folks were interested in seeing. Ex of christmas themed is pretty much anything associated with the holiday season (holly, wrapping paper, christmas lights, snow, ect.)

Just to clarify.

I personally love the gorey/bloody pets, even if they're not for Halloween. They're easy for me to pin characters to, as I'm a major horror buff.

As far as themes go I also like the beach, but I'd love to see more aquatic things. Or even colors based on aquatic critters. Freshwater fish need some love too. I don't mind the colorations based on birds, but as they aren't my favorite critter, they're usually lost on me. Natural colors also speak to me fairly well.

I don't mind cosplay pets, though like everyone else said, they can be hard to pin characters to if they're overtly too much like their source. I feel like leaving that sort of stuff up to custom making is usually the best route.

Hmm... More themes I'd like to see. I'm a chef, so always a sucker for food. Anything inspired by such is always great, and that's why I've been striving to collect one of each Teigu. They're probably my favorite non-common pets. The galaxy/celestial would also be fun, I love it on the Lucain as it is and it would make for fun pet colors. As an avid hunter, I also wouldn't mind seeing some more camo around the site. Not just woodlands either, anything works as camo if you're good with it. :)

Oh, for festive pets, I have to say I really like having pets that were originally "creepy" get a "cute/festive" design.

Re: Liked & Disliked Themes & Concepts

Postby Shieba » 09/02/2015 6:06 AM

I don't like the "usual" Christmas coloration much, but usually like color-themes revolving around seasons. Winter with white/light blue is a great one, but I do also love autumn/sunset-themes or pastel themes for Easter. That's kind of my "holiday" thing, so to speak.

I absolutely love celestial and starry stuff and I adore gradients. But most people knew this already.

I dislike all blood and gore immensely, but also everything dark-themed, which is why Halloween tends to be the point when I drop out of the internet for a few days to avoid the whole Halloween stuff. That's how much I dislike it. <_< Sadly, that often reflects in how much I like the Halloween pets. I think the only Halloween pet I ever really adored was the Star Seraphent. I read just now that it's a cosplay pet, if I got this correctly? Oh well, as I have no idea who it cosplays, I never had any problems with pinning a character on one and never associated it with something dark or Halloween-like in any way, which... is probably the whole reason why I like it so much. Yay!

I personally am also not very keen on robots, pets based on food (I find the theme too restrictive) and pets based on real animals. That does not mean that I don't like natural colorations - I adore natural colors! I just don't like it when I look at a pet and see how it's based on a real animal because then I just can't pin a character on the pet since it basically got some already. (Which is why all my Diosol are "only" bunnies. I love natural-colored Diosol, but since they look like real bunnies, I could never pin a speaking character on one. It's also why I have no Lucain in a natural color+natural marking combination - if I would have a Lucain with Giraffe and colored like a giraffe, I would have to RP it as a giraffe as I could never see it as anything else. X_X) Robots are just my personal problem, I guess - unless there are a lot of organic/magical parts, they just don't fit into the "fantasy"setting Evelon has in my mind.

Another "theme" I have problems with are pets with lighter lineart. We don't have many outside of breeding albinos, but I feel I should mention it anyway since they always just scream "ghost" to me and that's very restrictive as well.

Basically, I like most color-themes (except for Christmas colors). Like the Beach Fenling based on a beach. Colors are great! But things which are more restrictive and base pets on more specific things (be it an animal, food, something inorganic like a robot), the chance I will use that pet is VERY low since I will most likely be unable to pin something on it. I feel like these things are a bad middle ground. If I want a pet with a design specifically representing a character, I get a custom. For when I get the pet before its personality (so to speak), the chances of me using the pet rise dramatically the broader its theme/concept is. The sole exception here are celestial pets. I will always have a use for celestial pets because they're just so darn pretty.

I know my dreams are made of you
Of you and only for you
Your ocean pulls me under
Your voice tears me asunder
Love me before the last petal falls

However cold the wind and rain
I'll be there to ease your pain
However cruel the mirrors of sin
Remember beauty is found within

Going to post my own.

I like most themes. Themes I greatly dislike are things that rotate around anything overy stereotipically girly. The bright pinks, barbie blond yellow, glitter, and dolly thing bothers me. Though its kind of fun to actually rp a character who is something you dislike.

While I like christmas themed pets I also dislike them as well. They are harder to pin characters on. Though its getting a bit better since revamps have given most pets with this sort of problem a second chance due to the colors needing to be revamped and so they tend to get a more middle ground.

(I will possibly post more later because I am at work and its my lunch and lunch is almost over c:)

For those who know me well, you will know that I LOVE the dark and horrible. That being said, horror isn't all about blood and gore. Those things are fine in my book, but you should know my stance on it in horror literature (as in... overusing it is boring and bland-- it's not scary etc BUT... that is just in things outside Evelon) SO, what I would like to see Halloween wise is -- more playing off the shadowy look. I have some examples here, here, and here. Typical boogey man stuff, or just deformed abominations of your nightmares. This may be my preferred style of horror, but this is a suggestion after-all. Or things like the underworld nytemare, that thing was a great example. Also, undead are my bread and butter. Frankly, it's obvious that I have an easy time pinning characters for things like this, what with my army of monsters and cryptids XD

That being said, I suppose I can toss some other things. My passion is horror-- so I am a bit... well I personally can't do Christmas stuff well? However, if you were to do a more angelic theme with them instead of the normal red/green, that would be pretty neat.

As for new themes, I am huge into cyberpunk, so something cyber or hi-tech looking would be amazing. I would eat that up-- or even cyberpunk or a clockwork thing going on. Robots man, I love robots.

There is also science/medical stuff. Some may know that I am going into the medical science field, and I already spend plenty of time in the hospital (mostly allergy shots) or know that I am still sickly... heh. That said, I do collect the ancient artifacts of medical stuff throughout the years, so something relating to either of these would be fantastic.

Themes I like in short: Halloween themes (shadow-y beasts, blood, bone markings, glowing, general weirdness), Celestial/Space/Stars, sparkly things, things that look like they're weeping (stuff leaking from the eyes), dream and nightmare themed, science/medical-y things, desert/Egyptian things, deep sea, glowing/bioluminescent things, Aztec-ish things (feathers, beads, tribal markings), cyberpunk, steampunk, EVERYTHING ASIAN (be that more traditional, sparkly like K-pop stars, or colorful like harajuku girls), domestic and big cat themed, endangered animal themed, butterfly themed, flower themed, things with fangs, horns or wings for add ons, rave themed.

I usually don't mind Christmas-y pets, seeing as very few of the Christmas pets are actually VERY Christmas-y (such as the Carol Wockee and Festive Kitrell). So, in general, I either like or don't mind the Christmas and winter themed pets.

As for Halloween, it's my favorite holiday, and I love, love, LOVE the Halloween pets! Creepy, bloody, bones and bone markings, glowing, in costume, I just love it all. The only time I felt a pet was too much in the way of gore was the male Lucain that was auctioned off that had bloody organs at his feet. (Aside from those, which disturbed me the first several times, I actually wanted him, too.) I think the only Halloween type pets I don't care for are the pumpkin/crop based ones, since that's where I feel restricted. Pumpkins/crops aren't too inspiring for me.

For cosplay pets, most of them are vague enough that they aren't really an issue for me. The one based off of Eggman is bit difficult to use, but that's mostly because of the colors, not the character it's based off of.

I like some more natural patterns, but it depends. I gravitate toward mammals. I don't like colorations based off of parrots or birds with similar colorations, since I can't get into the red/yellow/blue/green combos with the shades found on said birds.
