Guild Wars 2 (and Heart of Thorns)

Postby Flame » 04/12/2015 6:34 PM

So! I spend a LOT of my free time playing Guild Wars 2, which is an MMORPG, for those of you who might not have heard of it, and one which has picked up a whole lot of popularity since it's launch in August of 2012.

I was curious to see whether there were others who play the game as well on Evelon (I know I've seen mention of Tyria and its races around the forums occasionally here and there) and what server/races/classes/gameplay you play or prefer. :3 I'm always on the lookout for more people to play with, AND, to top it all off, it's currently just $10 to buy the game (through tomorrow). And the best part of it is, there aren't any subscription fees, which is why I decided to dabble in the first place, and now I'm hooked. XD I would definitely recommend trying it out if you like or want to try out an MMO, since there's really not much to lose from spending $10 on a game, even if you decide you don't like it. I, for one, have put more than 1,500 hours into the game, if I remember correctly. (shhhhh~) XD Of course, I don't get kick-backs or referrals for getting people to join - I just think that it's an awesome game with an amazing community (rate #1 for being the friendliest, yay!) and great gameplay. :3

So, they've been having periodic sales ever since the announcement of the new expansion that's coming out - Heart of Thorns. There's no release date on it yet, but hopefully it'll be before the end of the year, and there's SO MUCH new stuff that they're releasing along with it. So, for those of you who do play, what do you think of all the new announcements? The patches that they've recently made (like the stability changes, etc.)? Predictions for the new expansion? Or just opinions or questions about the game in general?

I personally main a female Charr guardian, although I've kinda switch my favor over to my new female Norn mesmer, of late (such a fun class to play), and I mostly play organized WvW in the game. My guild is PvX, but focuses heavily on WvW zerging, and the guild I was in before that was a designated zerg-busting guild (but unfortunately the guild died about half a year ago, alas). I'm on the Henge of Denravi server (Hodor!), and I've got a max-level of just about every class except for thief and engineer, simply because I'm not a fan of thieves, and because I just haven't found an excuse to make an engi. OHHH my GOD I've been wanting to play this for the longest time and I'm SO glad you posted this, or I would've never known about it being so cheap to buy right now. Thank you thank you thank you! <3333

I have a question though; if I buy a digital copy, is it possible to transfer it from one computer to another? Because the current computer I have can't handle it, but I'm going to get another computer as a graduation gift that could definitely handle it. Does the purchase just buy an activation code, or something?

Yay! :D I'm so glad that I posted this now too, haha. You absolutely CAN'T beat buying GW2 for $10, that's for sure. :3 I've been nagging all of my friends whenever the game goes on sale and I've gotten several of them to buy the game too. XD

As for your question, you can download the game on any computer you want (the game file itself is free to download). You just have to sign in to your account, so you can have as many copies of the game as you want on as many computers as you want. I mainly play on my rig, but when I travel, I bring my laptop and play on that (albeit with much crappier framerate XD). The purchase just creates an account attached to the email that you use to sign up, and you create yourself a unique user ID. So no worries about switching computers! :D

I'm in the process of downloading the game right now.  It looks quite interesting!  Debating between choosing a Sylvari or a Norn as my first character--as well as what class to even go with. XD;  I tend to favor a more close-combat style of fighting, like the rouges in Dragon Age, or the Jedi/Sith in SW:TOR.  Or, well, anything that uses (a) sword(s) to fight. XD

Thanks a ton friend! I'll definitely buy it before the day ends. As for species, I'm definitely either gonna be a female Charr or a male Sylvari, leaning towards the latter because I have character ideas, heheh. ;w;  I'll be an elementalist if a Charr, or a ranger or thief if a Sylvari.

Hehe, I love my Charr. <3 You see very few female Charr in the game, so mine is pretty memorable. But yeah, just a warning ahead of time, there's a pretty steep learning curve for playing ele (I mained mine for zerg-busting as a staff support ele), but it has the potential to be the best class in the game. It was the first class I created too, and I was so confused as to why my guardian friend always had so much of an easier time than me. XD

Sooo I decided to go with a Charr instead of a Norn or a Sylvari. >w< I've always had a soft spot for feline characters.  If anyone wants to add me as a friend on the game, my tag on there is SpringsSong.8607, and I'm on the Henge of Denravi server. =3

Hehe, I love Charr. <3 I just added you, so if you go to your friends list (which is the "Y" key), go down to the third tab on the left that says "Followers" and I should be there. I'm Kill Upon Sight.7643 (if anyone else wants to add me as well, feel free ^^). Feel free to ask any questions if you have them! There's definitely a lot to learn in the game. :3

Dude, Flame, I didn't know you were on Henge! Come teach Silas and I how to WvW. ; o; We recently started playing again and have little else to do in normal PvE than map-complete and level alts.

I'd love to play with you; I'll have to nickname you in-game or something since I completely forgot that you were Kill Upon Sight.

Oooooh~ You have NO idea how excited I get to find more Henge people. <333 But yeah, I know what you mean about PvE getting a little old after a while. I've got two characters with full map comp (WvW included), 6 80's, and almost all the legendaries that I want (at least out of what's currently available - saving for the new ones being released though!), haha. But yeah, that's why I started dabbling in PvP and WvW. I'd say that to get the full enjoyment out of WvW, you should try running with a guild that actually does WvW runs in an organized fashion. I still remember my first experience in WvW - I was on a non-80 elementalist with no idea what I was doing (and didn't even have a mastery over my own class yet X3) and I just kept getting spawn-camped by the other team. Soooo...I didn't touch WvW for like, a year after that. XD But since I started running with organized WvW guilds, it's been oodles of fun, since each of the classes is built specifically to support the zerg and your party (heals, condi clears, buffs, etc.), and a good zerg-busting group of ~7 can massacre zergs of 50+. It's AWESOME.

But aaanywho, before I go too far into unnecessary detail, feel free to shoot me a whisper or message in-game at any time! I lose track of the people on my friends list as well, so you'll have to remind me of what your ID is so that I can nickname you too. :3 If you're looking for a guild (and looking to casually start getting into WvW), my guild is always open to new members, and everyone there is really friendly and helpful. We have the whole range of players of different skill-levels and levels of newness to the game, so everyone's welcome. ^^ We have our own PvP arena as well, if you wanted to try that (without the pressure of hotjoin - it can be a nightmare X.x), and we do guild missions twice a week and we have events almost every day of the week. Of course, if you don't want to commit to a guild either, we always welcome people who want to join us for WvW rallies and the such (which happen primarily on Fridays @ 9pm EST, Saturdays @ ~10:30pm EST, and Sundays @ 8pm EST).

So, now that I think I've overwhelmed you with information, do let me know if there's anything you want to know/questions/etc. XD Otherwise, I hope to catch you in-game sometime! :D

My fiance and I have been thinking about joining for a while and now we have an excuse to! So we did XD My user name is Xlonia.1398. I haven't made a character yet though. Darn thesis work and Microbiology studying.

That sounds like something we would definitely be interested in - our current guild's missions happen on nights we're working, so we rarely catch them. >: We're also looking to start learning dungeon paths, does your guild have any patience for that/run dungeons at all?

Handle is Iiskie.5720, for you and anyone else who'd like to add me. I main a human mesmer with a couple alts, and love running around with folks. 8>

Awesome, Firetra! :D And ooooh, you're a microbiologist too? I work in biotech myself as a microbiologist (just graduated last May ^^). But I'm glad you joined! It's an awesome game, and like I said to everyone else, feel free to shoot me a message/whisper or post here if you have any questions about the game, or just want people to play with. :3

Ander - we have two sets of guild missions so that people who can't make one can make the other. :3 We have them at 4:30pm on Wednesdays (I think), and 9pm on Saturdays EST (which are the ones I go to), and they ALWAYS succeed since we have a pretty big guild. As for dungeons, I could single-handedly teach you most of the speed runs for the dungeons that people run for money. I'm the person who teaches dungeons in our guild, so feel free to ask if you ever want to learn any, since I can teach you all the tips and tricks. And our guild in general runs dungeons a LOT, so you'll always be able to find people who will run them with you. ^^

I was glad I find out about the sale and finally got the game, yay! Been playing my Charr ranger when I have the time. I’m so use to playing WoW that the simplest game play on this tends to be confusing but I’ll get the hang of it in time. I just had one question, how do you join a guild?

If anyone would like to add me, my tag name is Sappheara.6530.

Awesome! I love the fact that my post actually helped people out and got so many of you to join. <3

Yeah, the gameplay is a little confusing at first, but the controls all work very smoothly once you start to get the hang of it (except maybe your skills #6-0, since they're so hard to reach - I use a gaming mouse for that, but you can also rebind those keys to other keys or key combinations on your keyboard). I'm thinking that I might write a quick beginner's info post just to give people some pointers that might not be immediately obvious, but make your life infinitely easier in-game. For example, holding the right-click button and moving your mouse moves your camera and also allows you to move your character simultaneously in the direction you're facing your camera in; there's a little gear symbol in the top-right of your inventory, and if you click it, there are options for "Deposit All Collectibles" and "Compact" (as well as other nifty tools like "Show Rarity") - those two options are your best friend for keeping your inventory clear and organized since it'll directly deposit all of your crafting materials into your bank (you'll never need them while just running around), and compacting on a regular basis will help you keep track of what loot you just picked up since it'll show up at the end of your inventory; if you have friends you want to play with in-game, you can invite them to a party (max 5 people) by either pressing "P" or clicking the little silhouette of a person on the top and typing their name in (or just right-clicking them in your friend's list, which should give you an "Invite To Party" option); there are several different types of chat, and you can change your audience by clicking on the text in front of your chat line (which will probably say [Say] or [Map]) and selecting from that list.

That's just off the top of my head, for anyone who doesn't know about it, and hopefully it helps at least someone. As for finding a guild, to join one, someone in the guild needs to send you a guild invite. If you're looking for one, usually going to one of the main cities (primarily Lion's Arch) and posting in map chat asking for a guild will net you a whole bunch of invites. Just make sure you mention what server you're on, and what content you're interested in (e.g. PvE, PvP, WvW, dungeons, fractals, missions, etc.). You can also start your own guild, if it's an option you're interested in. If you're on Henge of Denravi, feel free to talk to me if you're interested in a guild, since the one I'm in is pretty big, has over 1,000,000 influence, and we're PvX (so we do everything) with a focus on organized WvW and guild missions. We do dungeons, fractals, PvE farms, and we have our own PvP arena as well. :3
