"No. I had another 2, but they went to live with their father," Bright Heart answered for her kits. "They're quite a disappointing litter, though. Not anything like my first kits. Sangria and Tristis, they wander off together quite a lot," she sighed, then continued. "Usually in the dead of night, but sometimes they sneak off in the daytime, too. Who knows where they venture off too..." Bright Heart knew that if Sera and Mattina could've accompined her, too, she'd be tripping over things more, and acting her usual self. But Tristis and Sangria needed special attention.
Sangria pretended she didn't hear any of that, and continued her efforts to escape. Tristis was just staring blanking into space, like he had been the last 5 minutes. His mind wandered to his elder step-sisters. Were they having fun exploring the Vast Plains? Sera seemed a lot like their mother, when she was her normal self. But Mattina, Mattina was sort of like him. Quiet. It felt like Sangria, Mattina, and himself were so much older than their mother and Sera. Only when their mother was her usual, clumsy self. But of course that wasn't true. His shadow flickered. Something was wrong. Either with Sangria, or his shadow just felt uncomfortable, which was the usual reason. He shook his head, and his shadow stood still. He lifted his head to where Sangria was a minute ago. She was still there, but in shadow form. This was her usual trick. Turn into shadow form, wiggle out, then go hunting. He shot a look at her. She glared at him.
'I'm going hunting.' she mouthed.
'No you're not!' he answered back. They were both expert lip readers.
She glared at him.
'I'm going if it's the last thing I'll do!'
'Do you want me to tell mother?'
She glared again.
'You wouldn't!'
'I would. In fact, do you want me to do it right now?'
She glared, then turned back into her regular, non-shadow form.
