It had been enough days now that Damien had lost count, but finally--

Breakthrough!

The guy Damien spotted seemed like a shoe-in for the local mystery magic user.

Image

The man wove back and forth slightly as he walked, as if he were unstable on his feet. And he smelled--well, not entirely fresh. A bit like rotten potatoes, actually. But Damien was used to magic smelling unpleasant. Surely he was the one! Damien slunk low in the crowd and followed him.

The mystery man approached the Wishing Well--

--and threw in a stone.

Damien bit his lower lip in a huff.

Yato dashed into the trees, the sight of the well far behind him. The beast's head weaved between trunks with more grace than its hulking form should have allowed, shadows spilling from its mouth like waves of water, a mist that stung Yato's legs with pins and needles before he leapt into a high tree and steadied himself there. He sent a slice hurtling down, shaving off a hunk of shadows as he leapt into another tree, climbing into the thinner branches with a nervous grit to his teeth.

"Yato! Look back, the well!" Yukine's voice barked in his ears, and Yato jerked his head over his shoulder, gritting his teeth against the blight burns across spattered across his face from the demon's shadowy blood. Back at the well, it looked as though a great dark mass was growing out of it, engulfing the well in shadows and swirling magenta energy.

"Its core," Yato breathed, flicking Sekki in his wrist to free it of blood. "Alright... still with me, Yukine?"

"Still with you," Yukine's voice echoed from the sword, more serious than snarky, now. Yato nodded, and shouted in surprise as a blast from the demon shattered the branch he was perched upon. Yato thrashed and dug Sekki into the bark of the tree, pushing off from that sturdy hold to hit the ground running. "Oi! Asshole! You'll dull my blade like that!" Yukine snapped, and Yato managed a grin in spite of the fear and adrenaline coursing through him.

"If you're dulled by a little bit of tree bark, I might need to find a better Regalia," he panted, looking over his shoulder as the beast came hurtling after him. Yato ducked and hit the grass below as it sailed overhead, unable to stop in time before hurtling into a tree with a sickening thud. It really did almost seem solid, in spite of its physical makeup of ethereal darkness. Undeterred, it changed its course, snapping the tree with a toss of its head and sending it crashing down in front of Yato's path towards the well.

Now that a bit of time had passed, Midnight was beginning to develop some suspicions about this well...

In the several days after his last visit, his prior experiment had shown no obvious results from what he could tell. Amid his other affairs he had been keeping at least one eye out for anything to come about from that wish he had made, yet whatever it was that he might have been expecting never happened. Thus the man questioned whether or not the well actually had anything special going on about it, or if this whole thing was some strange ploy to fool the masses.

At first he'd started with pondering on the wish itself to determine where the problem lay. Were it possible that he'd been too vague in his choice of words? Had the well required an individual to be extremely specific and spell everything out verbally for the wish to take effect? Was the item he'd been clearly thinking of in his mind that day just too much to even ask for? If that were true, in that only simpler wishes could be granted by this strange power, then it wouldn't exactly sound all that promising as something even worth pursuing any further.

That was just a few of many more theories to come to mind.

By the time his thoughts had gotten around to considering that there was no actual magic tied to the well, the man would chance upon a strange looking ticket hidden among his things. A ticket that he had no recollection of ever having before. And he knew everything he owned down to the last detail.

This discovery prompted him into thinking that there may still be something to the mysterious well, and it could be worth his while to continue in his observations for a little while longer...

Narrowly missing the falling tree, Yato leapt over it, dodging huge branches as he went and slicing through one that seemed to swing out of nowhere from the force of the fall. He grit his teeth against splintering wood, hitting the ground and running breakneck for the well. "Ready, Yukine?" he whispered, bringing the blade to his fingertips, which had begun to glow.

Instead of speaking, the sword flared with light, and Yato began to murmur an incantation as the forest blared with the demon's roar behind them. "You, being of calamity, who would seek to desecrate this land... With my advent, I, Yatogami, lay waste..."

As he rushed up to the well, still whispering words rapidly under his breath, the shadowy head rushed forward with blazing eyes. And with a sharp, sudden raise of his arm, he sliced forward into the glowing core hovering above the well's depths. "Rend!"

With a blast of light, the core was sliced in half, and Yato's vision exploded with white light. He brought his arms to cover his eyes, keeping Sekki held close, protective, until the light faded, and the forest, the well, the surrounding area, were still and silent.

Yato panted softly, raising a hand to his face and wincing at the blight that burned there. They would need to find a shrine... somewhere with purification water. He leaned against the crumbling stone wall and eyed the well wearily, seemingly quite normal now that it wasn't pouring out shadows. He held Sekki out, murmuring a dismissal command, and with a flash of white light, Yukine was standing beside him and dusting off his coat. For a moment, both were silent, simply staring at the well, before Yukine felt a drop of rain on his head and peered up with a frown.

"Could've gone worse, huh," he murmured, glancing over at Yato, his injuries, and felt a pang of sympathy run through him. "C'mon. Let's head to that shrine nearby and treat that blight."

"You'll come with me?" Yato asked, out of jokes, it seemed. He looked too tired to quip, and Yukine simply shrugged in response.

"Hiyori would kill me if I left you alone like this. Besides... you said there was a storm brewing. You'll need me."

"Hmm..." Yato hummed a soft, fond noise, reaching out to lightly ruffle up Yukine's hair, to which the boy sputtered and swatted him away. He chuckled and slid his hands into his pockets, glancing back at the well one more time before following. "Well, I hope this whole thing goes to show you that it's wrong to steal coin offerings. Have you learned your lesson, Yukine?"

Yato cut off as a shoe connected sharp with the back of his knee, buckling him instantly with a shout of pain and surprise. "Stupid! Moron! Find your own purification water!" Yukine snapped, eyes blazing with outrage as he threw his hands up in the air and stalked away. Yato scrambled to his feet and let out a pitiful sound, chasing after him with apologies spilling from his mouth.

Ignoring her existential crisis about herself, her friendships, and the very nature of her reality - Ven returned to matters at hand. After all, even if this was an elaborate prank put on by her friend - who she was seriously revoking friend privileges for - she had already committed herself to this reality.

Her grades didn't care how she came up with a report, after all - just that she come up with something. And if that involved accosting random strangers for interviews - well, so be it.

"Um," she started off, suddenly feeling self-conscious about just how ridiculous she sounded. "You see, I'm investigating popular rumors about this wishing well - in particular, a recent story about how visitors have been finding tickets near it. I was hoping I could ask you a few questions about it, as a part of a school project."

The visitor stared at her blankly.

"Look, it's okay if you don't want to - but it really would be a great help for me! It's only a few questions, and I won't include any identifying information in my final report so you don't have to worry about that or anything."

(raffle ticket please!)
and if you ask how i regret that parting:
it is like the flowers falling at spring's end
confused, whirled in a tangle.

there is no end of things in the heart.

Franciscus walked up to the Wishing Well with a frown. He'd heard plenty of stories about what it could bring, but so far no one had any concrete proof of the well being the cause of it. On the other hand, after all his adventures, he knew much better than to dismiss it out of hand. And so far, all his efforts to find Gerard had come to naught. With a sigh, he took a single Keystone out of his pocket and held it over the mouth of the well.

"There's someone I'm looking for," he said softly. "Please help me find him." And then he let go.

You're my crystal and clover
All of me
Honestly
Is dedicated to hold you

Swear to God

What would you do if I stole you tonight? (Ahh ahh)
Why waste time? (Ahh ahh)

'Cause the world goes on without us

All silhouettes with no regrets
When I'm melting into you
'Cause I belong in your arms
I belong in your arms

Lana. Xyshari.

The women returned once more, hand in hand today. They both held onto keystones as they approached the well, exchanging a simple glance with each other before looking to the well. Lana offered Xyshari's hand a squeeze as they approached the well.

"If you're sure this is what you want to wish for..." Lana said, and Xyshari nodded.

"I am," she said. "But this doesn't change anything between us, all right? You're my wife. I have pledged to be with you," Xyshari said, and Lana chuckled as she leaned over to give her wife a kiss.

"I know, my love," Lana said. With that, they took and dropped their keystones into the well in unison.

Thinking I can see through this to see what's behind
Got no way to prove it, so maybe I'm lying

Don't ask my opinion, don't ask me to lie
Then beg for forgiveness for making you cry
'cause I'm no prophet or Messiah

ZLi wasn't usually stationed in the jungles. Really he was just passing through. The Well had never caught his attention before but he could not get over the rumors that the well was handing out raffle tickets. What could it possibly have to raffle? As it was, he was certain the thing didn't grant wishes. A raffle. Zli laughed to himself as he looked over the edge of the well.

The little bear waddled straight to the well. Clearly, there was a mission at hand here and he would not be deterred from it. His gaze never wandered, never left the well. It was slow going, but his little legs could only go so far ahead of one another. He remained determined, even with all the commotion and people around him. However, upon reaching the well a problem presented itself. The wombear was just too small! He crouched down, wiggled his butt and jumped! But to no avail-- there was simply no way for him to climb to the top. He backed up, sat down and one hand stroked his chin as he considered his options. He wanted to see his wish go down the well, that was how he'd always imagined it was done, but clearly that wasn't going to happen. HIs lips twisted to one side as he thought, before striking the golden solution. Gripping his keystone in one hand, he threw his arm back and launched it in an overhand toss. Seeing the keystone go over the side of the well, but not into the well, the wombear opted to be optimistic and assume the keystone made it down. HIs eyes shut and he made his wish, before turning around and, with the same determination as before, walked back the way he came.

Emrys was the sort of hopeless romantic who believed in soul mates, love at first sight, and wishing wells. So when he had heard that there was a particular well in Evelon that was granting wishes, of course he had been willing to travel across continent if it meant a chance at having his wish granted. And he hadn't come empty handed. His keystone supply was running a bit low after travel expenses, but he had a few to toss into the well, a goodwill offering that would hopefully make the well a bit more favorable towards him.

Stepping up, he dropped the stones into the well, listening for the light splashing sound that indicated that they had reached the water. Once this was done, he closed his hands, clasped his hands tightly together, and made his wish in his mind. Let me find love... true, lasting love. It was all he really needed to make his life complete.

And hopefully, now, he would find it.

So the last guy had clearly been coming to the well to wish, not to grant wishes. But Damien was certain he had something this time.

And he'd been able to use his magic nose this time!

Image

Even without taking a big whiff, this guy had a smell--an aura--that was positively out of this world. And not in a creepy stalking-him kinda way--he literally smelled like nothing Damien had ever encountered before. But it did remind him of his own magic, though--it reminded him of hot metal and the taste of blood.

(...that he'd tasted after sucking on a papercut! Damien wasn't that kind of demon!)

Damien watched intently as...

...he walked up to the well and dropped in a stone.

This man spoke his wish in a clear tone of voice. "Hey... I'm, uh, still looking for my suit of armor. It was stolen away from my ship after I crash-landed here... If, uh... This is stupid, why I am I doing this?"

Well, at least he knew now that someone agreed with him.

Laura was back again. She like this area and she found it the perfect place to take her lunch. After finding a shady spot in the grass she sat down and opened her sandwich. As she ate she watched people approach the well and make wishes. She made guesses on what they would wish for. She began making fake stories about each one of the people. She laughed to herself about it all. The time passed quickly and soon it was time to pack up and leave. It was a lunch hour well spent.

Harvey Dent

He stood about, watching as the commoners walked about. Most of them noticed him, but pretended not to notice. It would be hard not to notice him, as half of his face had been burned off. He flipped his coin with everyone passing by, but luck seemed to be on everyone's side, as it kept landing on heads. After about half a dozen people passed by, however, he managed to miss grabbing it. It bounced off the ground and began to ricochet down toward the well. With a plunk, it landed in the water below. "Dangit," he said. "I wish I hadn't dropped it." He rested his hands in his pocket, to find his signature coin inside. "What the..."

The day had started slow, waking up at a good time, relaxing. And then they'd fallen asleep sometime in the late afternoon, getting knocked out for a good four hours. Such was likely to happen after such hard weeks.

What mattered is that they hadn't forgotten to pay a visit to the Wishing Well! It was bad enough that they'd forgotten to visit on the very first day... they weren't proud of that one.

They reached the well, and without wasting any time, they dropped their small Keystone in the well.

Some time had passed since there had been some kind of... "incident", of sorts? And of course it had something to do with Bacca and Kassia! Jayden honestly still couldn't figure out what in the world those two kits were going on about that day, when they suddenly barged into his home squeaking out loud about "something creepy in the weird round rock thing!" It took a lot of effort just to get them to calm down from their puffy and panicked states so that they could explain themselves.

"T-That old rock thing made by the humans..." Bacca puffed, still haven't quite caught his breath just yet. "Something was... was in there. And it was loud too!"

Now, he was pretty familiar with a lot of places around the town, and he knew for a fact that there was nothing in the well. But they had kept on insisting that there actually was something, and he frankly was getting tired of them talking about it. So he had decided today was the day he'd go out to check it out, and report back. "If I find nothing is down there, you two better shut up about it from now on, got it!?" He'd snapped at them earlier out of irritation. The pair had promised, but he wasn't going to get his hopes up as he finally arrived at the well.

From the outside, everything seemed normal and quiet, though it was the inside of the well that was main point of interest. The cat would quickly get closer to it, and held himself up on two paws to take a look...
