Joining a detective agency was much, much more drab than she thought it would be. "It's training!" they told her. "You're the newbie, so you get all the grunt work." Verniy told herself--no, tried to convince herself--that it was fine. She trusted her seniors when they told her that this would be a step toward solving her brother's case. Though, what dragging in a few agency wash-ups, wanted by no one, did to facilitate her "training", she hadn't the slightest idea. She left the pitiful things at the door of the establishment and strode to the counter.
Hold your head up high, she reminded herself. You're an actual detective now! With the same pride of a child buying their first piece of candy, she slapped the note down on the counter. "That'll be all, sir!" she beamed, and held out an open hand that awaited the money she had been promised.
