a. I remember this question was answered before. Just can't remember the answer. ^^;

2. Nope! Not quite! Instead you are supposed to make a note in your barracks that they have died. You can pray at the shrine and hope that you'll get your pet brought back. Just remember that it won't always happen.

Actually, her question was if the pet didn't die. In which case, yes, they are 'healed' - damage does not carry from one battle to the next.
