So I was thinking of getting some Pokemon-based customs, and that led me to think about cosplay pets in general. How would the rule against copying designs apply to them, considering how it's likely pets based on the same character will look similar? Should this just always be discussed with whoever already has a custom cosplay pet of that character? I think this kind of applies most to Pokemon-based designs, since there's less variance you can have with them.

I'm not a mod, and maybe one will chime in with more detail, but I'm going to say that I think it's okay as long as you do it differently enough from the first person. For example, you could use a different species as the base, or change the markings a bit.

As you can see, they're very different, and I think that's okay and nobody would be mad about it! :3 (There's also a Sylveon Sahound (which Mojave owns) and a Sylveon Phyrette (which I own) so there's a lot of them going around!)

If it were a breedable, like a Lucain, you'd just have to use at least some different markings.

If you're really unsure, you could always ask a mod directly, and/or ask the owner of the pet you're worried about copying.

Pretty much what Silver said, there's so many different ways to achieve what you're after. A person cannot own a pokemon or claim exclusive rights to it and they can't get upset if another custom of that same pokemon surfaces. However, we will refuse a design if it's an 100% match to an existing one.
