> Rexus deMorgan <

“ Looks like rain, if you ask me. ”

Last known residence:
18 Gerville Terrace Medicai City
Technical info:

Personality words:
Practical, gloomy, introverted.

Rexus deMorgan used to be a necromancer, a very long time ago. He came from a long line of necromancers, each more terrible than the last, and as a general rule, goddesses of fate don't look too kindly upon necromancers. In the end, Rexus ended up working for the aforementioned goddess. Over the centuries, Rexus has grew quite fond of his job until the realm that he was working in became defunct and both he and the goddess fled to Evelon. As far as they know, they're the only ones left.

Rexus is pessimistic, even for a reaper. He always assumes the worst, and unfortunately for him the worst does usually happen. Back in his old realm, Rexus used to work quite diligently and it takes a lot to shock or spook him. Rexus, like all necromancers, (even reformed ones) has a bit of a flair for the dramatic and as such, has a bit of a penchant for old cathedrals and graveyards and anything else that might be considered macabre. It'd actually be quite amusing, if Rexus possessed anything that might count as a sense of humour.

Generally though, Rexus is a quiet soul who likes to stay as far away from trouble as possible. He's very interested in science and history and possesses enormous, elderly volumes full of these subjects. In fact, the library is one of the only things other than Alma(the goddess) and Rexus to have survived. He's always interested to hear what other people have to say on the subjects that catch his attention, and it's one of the few times he actually appears outwardly cheerful. Usually Rexus is a solemn, quiet fellow who'd much rather be curled up with a good book than running around outside. Despite this, he does have a bit of a habit of getting into trouble. Most people make the mistake of underestimating Rexus, he's exceptionally cabable and will find his feet very easily in most situations. A deMorgan that survives past the age of twenty-five is nothing to sneeze at, not only is there seventeen or eighteen family curses to contend with, there's the prophecies, destinies and the portents, the fact that the family was known for being murderous and that a good many people wanted them all dead. It's probably lucky that the rest are long gone.

Rexus is shorter than you might imagine he should be, around five foot three, with a shock of black hair, eyes that are closer to maroon than crimson and pale. (Although that's due to lack of sunlight rather than his status as a reaper.) He looks to be around forty and usually carries with him a plain-looking scythe. He dresses plainly, but well, even if he does have a disconcerting fondness for cloaks and long scarves.

> Arthur Maycott <

“ Why do people insist upon making so much noise? ”

Last known residence:
4 Coney Street, Lamenolai
Technical info:
he|lucain|human
custom|none
Personality words:
Excitable, unfeeling, intelligent, theatrical

Arthur Maycott is York's very own rich eccentric, he runs a small curio shop down one of the little cobbled streets. People flock from all over just to see what he stocks, from canopic jars to albino crows. He buys stock and makes deals just about everywhere. Before Arthur, his father and uncle ran the family antique's business, his father is now retired and his Uncle Edgar died many years ago.

The young man is rather macabre, having a profound interest in anything, well, curious. He once bought a mummified cat in a box, then managed to sell it for four times the amount he paid. Death interests him, and he tends to show a distinct lack of empathy without realizing it. Lest he get a hold of anything dead because he'll have either stuffed it, taken the bones out of it or be sat their prodding it's brain with a scalpel. He can be quite excitable when the mood strikes him, and when he's trying to get some new curiosities he seems to have a boundless amount of energy. Arthur is extremely quiet, he'll go for hours without saying anything and when he does it's in a near-whisper. Those around him have to be pretty decent at lip reading to be able to respond to him in a crowd, though you'd be hard pushed to get him anywhere near a crowd in the first place. As a general rule, the eccentric dislikes people, though he'll put up with those that wander into the shop because he has to, acting like a proper showman while he advertises the curiosities.

Arthur has a rather distant nature, there's no doubting the fact he has a scientific mind, though it is a rather disorganized one. His head is always in the clouds, and it can be difficult to get him to come back down to earth. Axel is one of the few people who can put up with Arthur for long periods of time, his biting sarcasm cuts through the other man's rather distant nature. They've worked together for so long now, it's starting to become rare to find one without the other.  Arthur, despite being rather unfeeling at times does have a heart, usually when you least expect him to be bothered about something. He has a great love of picking at what people say when he's bored enough, twisting what they actually mean just to annoy them. At times, he really can be unpleasant, Axel pretty sure this apparent mean streak isn't a deep-running personality trait and just another one of his acts.

He's a relatively handsome man, provided he's not covered in dust or God knows what from hunting unusual antiques down in foreign cities. There's something very sharp about his features, though. He has green eyes that have a permanently sad look. Arthur also wears glasses for reading, even if Axel is charged with looking after them so he doesn't loose them. His hair is brown and perfectly short, usually hidden beneath an expensive hat of some kind, funnily enough, he's about a head shorter than Axel, who's just six foot. Mr. Maycott is usually found with that battered brown suitcase of his, trying to hail down a cab before it starts to rain, knowing that if he's not on his way within the next five minutes he's going to miss his train.

> Axel Asplin <

“ I can see that this is going to end well. ”

Last known residence:
4 Coney Street, Lamenolai
Technical info:
he|lucain|human
custom|none
Personality words:
Pessimistic, business-like, suspicious.

Axel was brought up within a respectable family, his father was head of a quite a large publishing company which he at for awhile with his brother, Laurence Asplin. He was eventually dismissed after he repeatedly turned up late. Axel was quite an impressionable man at that time and it wasn't long before he fell into bad habits, and discovered a love of gambling. A love that put such a strain on the family finances that he was thrown from the family home. The final straw was when he lost his eye in a bar fight over (surprise, surprise) some debts he couldn't pay. That was when he was crossed off of the will and effective left to fend for himself. He was in prison for a short time, and then spent a further few months living wherever he could until an old friend of the family approached him, Arthur Maycott. He needed someone to help him with a business venture, and figured Axel was just the man for the job.

Axel is quite bitter about what has happened to him and while it was almost solely his fault, he holds a lot of resentment towards his family, Laurence especially. He hates to imagine what the other friends of the Asplins think of him, and will go so far as to duck behind the counter if he sees one of them enter the shop. He now won't touch gambling, but the drink is another matter entirely. Axel is much more responsible than he was, but that doesn't stop him getting completely and utterly drunk if he has a couple of days to lose. He's a cynic and a pessimist and always tends to see the worst side of things, and it takes a lot to get him worked up about something. Axel is a proud creature and hates being criticized, more so than most people. Being the perfectionist he is, it's unlikely he isn't aware of whatever the criticizer is saying. Like Arthur, Axel isn't a people person. His main worry is getting scorned by his relatives or old family friends, Axel keeps his past well way from the present, when he can manage it, that is.

He's exceptionally loyal towards Arthur and won't here a word against him, they're very good friends. Over time, he's learnt to cope with Arthur's eccentricities. One of the reasons they get on so well is because Axel doesn't try to fill in the silence, a quality that Arthur values enormously. Equally, they get along because he's not shy about prompting Arthur to speak or cutting through his thought process when he has to. He tries makes sure that the strange man doesn't go mad and suddenly start experimenting on people's cats or something. While often out-shone by Arthur, Axel is no idiot, either. He can usually keep up with whatever philosophical theory has caught Arthur's interest, even if he couldn't care less about it himself. He enjoys the adventure of looking for curiosities and is quite the businessman when it comes down to it. His creepy stare is the impressive, especially with the glass eye he has. It was one Arthur bought him as the first one he had was very cheap and didn't really match his eye-colour. He also wears a eye patch on occasion, if he has to.

Before he lost his eye, Axel was rather handsome. Very handsome, according to some people, with his large brown eyes and dark hair. He always knew how to dress, choosing long dark coats and hats that fit in with the fashions of 1880's York. He's much the same, apart from the eye, but it isn't pleasant. His clothes are generally a little shabbier now, and he's picked up on Arthur's habit of wearing old hats and is quite fond of an old circus top hat that Arthur bought, not that he'd ever wear it out of the shop. Funnily enough, Axel has a collection of glass eyes as Arthur buys him one every Christmas. It's a long-running joke.

Postby Mousen » 06/06/2013 8:58 AM

A group of teenage paranormal investigators who like to mess with shit they shouldn't.

Image

Jess Croup is a young man of 16, who's currently attending one of the most prestigious private schools in the country. His parents are exceedingly rich, practical and hard working and as such they see very little of any of their children. Jess has been raised nannies and tutors, largely. It's no surprise then, that in his boredom he's taken to getting into trouble now and again.

Jess is incredibly curious, to the point of being manic. Especially when it comes to anything to do with the paranormal. He's just has to know, and has to find the proof necessary to convince those around him that he's right. This is why he has bothered, badgered, begged, pleaded and on occasions bribed people to join his paranormal investigative group. He also supplies them with all of the expensive equipment they need.

Among his friends, Jess has a quick but rather severe sense of humor that manifests in sharp remarks and insults. Among strangers, he's a nervous wreck. Jess is emotional and doesn't hide it too well, in all matters, his heart is on his sleeve. Despite being an intelligent being, Jess is in the habit of assuming that other people are loyal to him just because he's loyal too them. This assumption has gotten him into trouble before.

He's a boy of average height with dark hair that's just long enough to be effeminate and stark, grey eyes with dark circles beneath them. Jess has a thin, pointed face and a slightly upturned nose, that gives the impression of being moneyed before you even hear him speak. Nearly all of his clothes are black.

Image
Nick Lazenby attends the much less prestigious local school that's on the other side of town to Jess's private academy. There's always been a one-sided rivalry between the local school and the private one, and some pupils from Nick's class were acting on this rivalry when they decided to attack Jess. Nick intervened and the two have become inseparable since. Nick lives in a small flat with her mother and sister.

Nick is a loud, brazen tomboy. She's extroverted, and enjoys being around people. She is, however much more cautious and practical than Jess. Nick isn't naive, and has seen many sides of human nature, not all of them good. She's tough, and more than a little bit suspicious.

Image
Mary-Jane Lazenby
Has about 10% of her vision remaining. Responsible one of the group. Bit of a tech-nerd. Resident skeptic.

Image
Harold St. Ives
The oldest of the group. Annoyed by everyone else around him. Particularly the dead girl that keeps following him.

Image
Tululah Garrison
Dead. Very upset about this. Currently trying to make the best part of a bad situation and since someone decided to mess about with a oujia board, she has little choice but to follow him around. She doesn't mind, though. It gives her someone to talk to.

Image
Indie Butcher.
Vegan, allergic to peanuts and pretty much everything else including horses and most flowering plants. Anemic. Reads tea-leaves, but is not very good at reading for anyone but herself.

Image
Vernice Williamson
The uncontested brains of the operation. Historian, researcher and behind Mary-Jane, the other responsible one. Forgetful but ambitious and on occasion slightly manic. A terrible flirt with other women, particularly Nick.`

Image
Makins
Young psychic of some small fame (or infamy in some cases). Badgered (blackmailed and bribed) into joining the group by Nick and Jess. Prone to dramatics, but good at what they do. Carries more protective symbols than a catholic church.

Antagonists:
Image

ImageImage
A green witch, isn't much of a fortune teller but occasionally reads entrails. Knows the value of old magic, the power in blood and teeth and elder branches. Relies mostly on intuition. Her parents are vaguely supportive but have no idea what to make of her.

Baxin.
No one knows if he's actually real or not. Turns up occasionally to be angry at people. Sometimes has a civil conversation with the witch-girl. Missing three fingers on his left hand.

The Circus

Mortimer Wiles is the Circus' ring master. He's been the ring master since the disappearance of the previous one, Silas. He previously worked for the circus as a juggler and musician, and was Silas' best friend.

Mort is mysterious, charismatic and always seems to have all of the answers... until he doesn't. Mortimer switches quickly from one persona to the next, so quickly that it's difficult to tell what's actually underneath all of that. His thought processes are hideously macabre and he's in the habit on wandering off into long, existential rants at the drop of a hat. He can also be rather violent at times, though this is never directed at any member of the circus. He's a quick thinker and his main priority is to keep the circus together. At any cost.

Death is a bit of a touchy subject for him, considering that he's technically undead. (That's a surprisingly simple story. An unfortunate accident in his youth and a lucky encounter with a necromancer.)Also, don't ask him about his family. His runaway son, Atlas is another reason thing he's rather sensitive about.

Mort likes to dress up, and does so. It's rare he's seen without a waist coat and cravat. He's bright ginger, and extraordinarily pale. His eyes, however, are just blank sockets.

Mortimer's bleeder Laudanum came about after the disappearance of Silas, although it had been festering since Atlas ran away. It's very vicious and will bite pretty much anyone that comes near it. Unless those people are Mortimer or Zari, that is.

Charlie Charles is the one of the two fire-eaters. He came to the circus after several buildings in his home town mysteriously caught ablaze. That being said, he's not a pyromaniac, but he is rather single minded and he knew that from a young age he wanted to be a fire-eater. Hence the unfortunate mistakes. One particular mistake actually caused him some serious damage. Charlie suffered from severe burns to one side of his body, mainly on his shoulders and neck. The scars are still there.

He's something of a genius, always looking to be new and innovative. He can be manic at times, always looking to pick things apart to see how they work. He's not as reckless anymore, the only person he's willing to take risks with is himself. ... Which usually means that he ends up with more burns than before. He's a pretty harmless guy, but his habit of talking without thinking gets him into trouble a lot. Weirdly enough, though, people tend to find Charlie weirdly charismatic and he never has a shortage of girlfriends or boyfriends. (Though, with his absentminded nature, his relationships never last very long.)

Charlie is tiny, around five foot two with short-ish curly blonde hair and rather strange eyebrows. (Parts of them have been burnt off.) He dresses in an eccentric manner, which usually means that he throws on whatever bright coloured pieces of fabric will cover the appropriate areas.

Zari seemed destined to be one of those girls that always ended up in trouble. The eldest of six she was a little bit more wayward and outspoken than her siblings, too curious for her own good. When she was twelve her second sibling was taken in by a group of poachers, thieves and ne'er-do-wells. Family life became even more difficult after that, so she ran away and joined the circus. Once there, she started training to become an acrobat.

When they were near the Fe'gan Mountains, Zari decided to make a visit to Basantha Shrine, where she found the hollow shell of a battleheart. She convinced him to go travelling together and after a time, they fell in love. Now Zari splits her time between travelling with the circus and living with him.

Zari is feisty, and tenacious, she doesn't give in until she's gotten what she wants. That being said, she can also be rather petulant and argumentative at times. She's dedicated, and loyal, with a little bit of a wild streak. Even though she's had more than enough trouble for a life time, it just seems to be drawn to her.

She's generally rather practical, with a dry sense of humor. Zari does not have time for airs and graces and has has no problems saying as much. She can be incredibly blunt. When it comes down to her true feelings, though, Zari can be rather guarded and it's often difficult to tell what she's thinking.

Zari is around five foot five, olive skinned with dark, curly hair. Her eyes are oddly pale-coloured, due to her biolune colouration in her cavillion form. Her clothes are a mix of ostentatious silks with intricate embroidery and over-sized t-shirts and jeans. There's very little in-between. She also has small, intricate tattoos that curl across her wrists and over her palms.

Drucilla is the circus's other acrobat, and the one who trained Zari. She was a close friend of Silas's up until the time of his disappearance. Her and Morte also go way back. It was the three of them that originally founded the circus. Morte as a juggler, Drucilla as an acrobat and trapeze artist, and Silas as a magician.

She is a quiet, reserved soul. She only speaks when she has need to. Drucilla is the voice of reason for many members of the circus, but particularly Morte. He was strange beforehand, but she feels that the necromancy unhinged him even further. She is not, however a bleeding heart and is generally rather cold towards most people. She is quiet, collected and very rarely shows her emotions openly. Drucilla does not mince her words.

- Young fortune teller

Is Zari's apprentice/person who takes over from Zari while she's away.

Curly chestnut-haired demi-boy (ish), Shapeshifter. Priest to trickster god. Magic-user. Primarily glamour/illusion, but also tricks/confusion. Fond of faking their own death.

Image Found her in a ditch and patched her up. She's some sort of undead thing. Very psychically strong.

Image
ex-Royal herald. Got bored when delivering a message and never went back. Cheerful, but impulsive.

Image Only male in the team, a distant, dreamy, but undeniably powerful mage. Also a psychopomp.

ImageHumanoid fish-type alien. Cold blooded. Loves lounging in the sun. Has pink fins/fronds. Cheery, bright, impulsive, talks too much, too quickly. Wears a vintage-looking space helmet that's basically a humidifier/air purifier.

Artificial Biological Lifeform. Only a beta model, so still has some electronic components. A step between robots and a full ABL. The brains of the operation. Kind of quiet, stoic. Gin.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... Sky347.gif Gorgeous. Always seems to be spotlessly clean. A winged humanoid alien. Looks suspiciously like an angel. Has various mental issues. Wears a white suit. Appears male, but eschews all notions of human gender identity. So, roughly agender.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... ony909.gif Mechanic. Used to be a soldier, but she retired. Has been kicking around bored for awhile, barely surviving off of her measely pension and then the Magpie turned up. They needed a mechanic, and she was available. She's the only human on the team.

Re: The House Under The Hill [New. Again. WIP]

Collier E. Boekelman : Heavily closeted nonbinary detective that works with Scotland Yard. Young, kind of emotionally unstable. Their minder is Basil, the infinitely patient police officer who wanted to be a detective but was nowhere near as ambitious enough. Pretty much Scotland yards "pet" detective: known to them and really only helps them or private cases. Usually UK based.

Fairrow - http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... ta1712.gif Mysterious character who only acts through aides. These aides are usually intelligent people who have gone off of the rails/didn't fit in with the education system and have ended up desperate for money. They're trained to relay every detail to them, leaving out nothing. The detective figures everything out from the evidence their aides get to them. A free agent who works for whichever agency they choose. They pick cases arbitrarily but actually carefully weigh up the amount of legwork needed, how interesting/difficult the case is, and the monetary reward from solving it.

In reality:
Needs aides because of having MS.

aides:
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... oid235.gif
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... raVoid.gif
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... Voi241.gif
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... Void26.gif

Has 16 aides in total. Though, they act in teams of 4. Each team has four different roles
One team member focusses on sights
One team member focusses on what people say/sounds
One team member focusses on humans (facial expressions/emotions etc.)
One team member focusses on physical evidence (finger prints, blood work etc.)

Miyoko http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... emale1.png Plain, experienced, sharp female ex-police officer who decided her talents would be useful elsewhere. She's the under-appreciated child of a genius maths professor. Sees things in terms of efficiency. Takes on a lot of homicides and political cases. Unsurprised at everything and very cynical.
Lost her index finger on her right hand while on a job. Messing about with the Japanese mafia is never a good idea. They took her trigger finger. Too bad for them that she's ambidexterous.
Takes cases based upon how much good can be done/how interesting it is. She refers simple cases to other detectives, so as to free up her time.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... hMale4.png Tadashi Very intelligence based detective. Extremely cynical. Feminine man. Thinks everyone else is inferior. Like the above, has been working as a detective for quite awhile. Has seen some very strange cases. Is the above detective's Rival. They occasionally work together on trickier cases, but typically have a rather antagonistic rivalry, sometimes going as far as to try to make the other's cases more difficult. Both as bad as each other.
Takes cases based upon how interesting they are/monetary reward. Has a habit of taking on too much/running themselves into the ground.

Bracken Gelston
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... g.gifYoung child detective of questionable gender. Not aristocratic, but picked up as a child by an agency who recognized their potential. Has much more power and influence than someone their age should. The agency is related to a vast corporate entity that was looking for an heir to the fortune that could be trusted not to run the company into the ground. Company produces software for computers. Hates the current CEO's lacksadaisical son, who they see as competition, despite them being the choice to take over.

Abner Laforte
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... eMale2.gif Tricky detective who is involved with a lot of illegal activity. Laid-back and cocky. Trans man. Uses their skill at being a detective to earn them "brownie points" when it comes to their own illegal activity. It's typically pretty mild, though. They own a string of "Feminist" or "Safe" brothels. Dabbles in drug dealing. Takes cases based on how famous the case is getting, or how troublesome it's being to the police - "brownie points". Can be pursuaded to take cases for other reasons.

Uriel Vetrov (Peter Bortnik)
Image Faux psychic detective. Lived in a pretty superstitious place when he was younger. Way out of the way. They wouldn't pay any attention to him when he talked about working things out himself, so he used the death of his childhood best friend and said he was a medium. Chronic, chronic insomniac. Uses caffeine to survive. Likes to drink cold black coffee dilluted with energy drinks. Slightly otherworldly look. Wears a lot of rings/bangles. Has a very sarcastic attitude. Doesn't say much. Pretty apathetic about most things.
Occasionally /does/ end up speaking to the ghost of his best friend. He assumes it's just the lack of sleep talking.

Jane Barnaby
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3/Ba ... male26.png Older retired detective. Female. Knows a lot. Very, very highly reguarded. Her "Watson" (Alison Moyes) died while on a case together. Refuses to take anymore cases, but due to the severity of the case is acting as the task force's manager. She will give input when asked for, but otherwise stays away from the details of the case. Her job really is to mediate between the strange personalities of the detectives involved.
