As a child, Calahan was raised by negligent parents, forced to fend for himself amid filth and squalor until a concerned neighbor's report was investigated and he was discovered in a comatose state by officials. Placed in Haru's orphanage, he was beginning to come out of his shell when his infatuation with another young boy came to the attention of the other children. Within a week of realizing Cal's sexuality, the bullying started. Deciding that he had been through enough, Haru adopted him herself. After settling in his new home, Haru introduced Cal to her nephew, Diego. The two quickly became fast friends, possibly helped along by Diego's silly antics to break the ice.
While Diego was forced into high society extracurricular activities, Cal was free to explore his own interests. About the time Diego discovered his passion for dancing, Cal began his love affair with the violin- though refrained from performing in school activities. Despite never hiding his sexual orientation, Cal enjoyed a sizable group of friends outside of Diego's company where he had his own experiences as a typical teenager. His past prevented him from taking an interest in drugs and alcohol, and as they grew older and the interests of their peers turned to sex and substance abuse, Cal and Diego grew closer still, often playing wingman for the other wherever they went.
At eighteen, noticing the increasing chaffing between Diego and his parents, Cal suggested they move out and get a place together where they could party whenever they wanted, have "company" over without parents interfering, and they could prove they didn't need their parents' money to support themselves. They've lived together ever since and still consider each other brothers.
Notes:
- Cal and Diego's first fight was over Cal giving him a black eye when Diego shook him awake the first time he slept over. They were six.
- Calahan started their morning ritual of getting ready to 80s-2000s rock music and trying to outperform each other in singing, exercise, and headbanging.
- His deepest fears are being left alone and his biological parents finding him
- Despite being a romantic and thorough lover, Cal always gives too much of himself to his partners while expecting nothing in return. This has left a very dark place in his heart that feeds his loneliness and anxieties.
