So read the sign above the gate.

The dusty ridges of tractor tires wrinkled the dirt road. Dried grass like the hair on a balding man's head gathered around the fenceposts. Beyond the roses carved into the sign and the fading paint on the ranch emblem, a vast expanse of grain flowed in the wind. A gyrophant bent its head beneath the press of the breeze and clipped at the pasture. A blaze of white glinted in the sky, throwing the sun off its iridescent feathers.

There was an odd quality about the air there, as if the entire place were sepia-toned. It had an oddly timeless quality. And yet, in that white speck of a farmhouse off in the distance, there was a computer hooked up to the Internet, a television with satellite, and a DracuLOL printout taped on the front door of one of the rooms.

A signpost by the gate greeted visitors.

"Ahhh. The only creature on this ranch more insufferable than me," Krii said as they reached a small pond.

"It's an honor to share a post with you too," the creature said, rather mysteriously.

"Don't worry about him," Jimmy said. "We think he's kind of crazy. Nobody knows where he came from, really, and he always says weird stuff. They don't call him 'Random' for nothing."

"Crazy? I'm the only sane man in this godforsaken teenage girl wasteland," he said. With that, he vanished beneath the surface of the pond.

"Cave doesn't talk at all," Jimmy said, gesturing to a kasuga roaming amidst the trees. "And I can't even understand him to make up for it. But he's loyal enough, so that's OK."

Despite the fact that his head was turned the other way, the creature seemed to know that they were there. It turned to them and nodded nobly.

"Oh. And let me show these off to ya..."

Still slightly unnerved by the sight of the strange, zombie-esque kasuga, and the equally uncanny malphas, the visitor hastily bid "Jimmy" (that couldn't be her real name. Could it?) goodbye and hustled off. The visitor had no particular aim in mind.

"Are you lost?" a voice said behind them. It was kind and affable, but it had a bit of a strange quality to it. It sounded almost...

The wide, glowing red eyes of an enormous, metallic... thing lingered behind the visitor's back. The visitor nearly jumped out of their shoes.

"Startled? Please don't be," the android said. "Allow me to introduce myself."

It was at this point the visitor decided that the Dashalls had a very, very bizarre sense of humor.

"We also have another Rabbot in a similar-looking model, but she's not related to them. She's a custom-made one, and she was a gift. We're not sure of her history, though..."

Shrewdly, the visitor noticed another, Rabbot-like form, hanging over in the distance. Its eyes peered out at them from the shadows. Something about it felt... not right.

The visitor ambled aimlessly through the fields for a few minutes. Such wide open spaces! And so much of it looked alike. If there were more trees and big objects amidst it, it would be a terrible place to get lost.

Luckily, there seemed to be a small, laughing convention of people up ahead. They seemed to be mostly animal--there was one human, chatting cheerfully with a wide collection of beasts. A deep, echoing roar of a laugh wafted over to the visitor. Intrigued, they drew closer.

The man noticed their approach. He ruffled the crown of red-and-gray hair rimming his head, and he scratched his beard pensively.

"Welcome!" he said deeply. His voice was warm and wise. "Visiting? Ha! Very good to meet you!" The man shook the visitor's hand and introduced himself as Julius Dashall. Ah--the proprietor of the farm! How nice.

"Let me introduce you. First, let me show you the Bluefrill family, right this way."

Julius didn't seem to notice the visitor's unease. "C'mon," he said affably. "Let me show you 'round to some of our other friends."

First up on the tour was an Anala, lazing in the shade of a tree with a tiny Palmie.

The visitor managed to pet the odd little empty kuhna on the head without the bizarre rejection kuhna gnawing their arm off. Yes, this was definitely a strange place... perhaps one that was best gotten off of. And fast.

The visitor waved goodbye to the Dashalls. They broke free of the barn, hustled out into the fields, and made for the gate as quickly as their legs could carry them.

Time to look for a slightly more stable place to stay.

-Freezair's Allies-

The surreal humor and overall eccentricity of the Dashall kin had left the visitor with a bad taste in their mouth--and a bit of a headache, to boot. They felt the distinct need to recover--though from what wasn't exactly obvious.

But where to head now? This was the middle of the Barakkan sticks; the Dashalls likely owned all the land for a good mile or so around. Perhaps more. Where to go to, ah--escape them?

Well, they'd soon find out, wouldn't they?

The visitor began to walk.

The day was--well, the day was Barakkan. Warm, but not too warm--oh, but the air! That damp, heavy air that clung to the face--arg. If only they'd thought to bring a battery-operated fan...!

Wait! What was that, down the street? A house? A house--that may well have air conditioning? Zu'hai be praised! The visitor sprinted down the remains of the dusty pathway, making for the creamy-colored cottage.

The visitor knocked, testing the door with a wavering call.

They were startled as the door swung open, more quickly than they expected. A hunched, reedy old anteater man in a tweed vest hung his claws over the doorknob.

"Oh...?" his nasal voice said. He pinched his spectacles between his nails and shifted his glasses.

The visitor explained themself.

"Oh...! Well, come in, come in! My wife and I were just having tea with our friends."

The visitor let themself be ushered in.

...And what a collection of friends! An elderly, obese cat woman was passing out tea and cookies to no less than fifteen distinct individuals, who all chatted ambiably amidst themselves. Nine of them seemed to be human, though all but one of them had odd ears that did not look entirely "right." The visitor suspected these were "anthros."

While talking with Freezair and her collection of friends, the visitor had heard about an excellent candy store down in the town of Nabias. Nabias wasn't a very long walk from Freezair's--or rather, Mr. and Mrs. DuPree's, but Freezair had such a strong and peculiar presence that she seemed to own the place anyway--and the visitor decided to see the store for themself.

The road to Nabias was thankfully clean of any "weirdoes," and Nabias itself was quite pleasant in general. With instructions scribbled on the back of the tea napkin, the visitor was able to find the shop, "Candy by Kane," with relative ease.

The sweet, enticing smell of peppermint tickled the visitor's nose as soon as they stepped inside. Promising! The visitor looked around for the candy giving it off.

The visitor realized with a start as they looked down--the smell came not from a what, but a whom!

A fourth (or was it fifth? The visitor was loosing count) wolf slunk in behind the others, but judging from her coloration, she wasn't related to any of the rest of them. They were all white and pink (and in her "regular" form, that girl probably was too), but she was various shades of green. And while all the rest of them smiled in some fashion--that tan one had more of a grimace going--she seemed sanguine.

"...Right," the lucain said finally. She and the girl went into the back. The older lucain's gaze followed Jade sadly.

The visitor stood, dumbfounded, as the Lucain and his family piled goodies into their arms.

Staggering outside under the weight of chocolates, sours, and marshmallow creams, they almost ran headlong into a werecain--wandering around in broad daylight?! They would have panicked, had the creature not had such an ingenue smile that it was obvious they were personally harmless. That, and the rather refined-looking gentleman hanging out with him made him seem somewhat more... withdrawn.

"Oh!" he said brightly. "Pawpaw took good care of you!"

Much, much later, when the visitor had filled their stomach with pillow mints and chocolate creams and Turkish delights and all manner of wonderful, sweet things, the visitor found themselves washing their feet in a pool beneath an Idalani waterfall.

Now here was a place where they didn't mind that famous Barakkan humidity! Little pearly bulbs of mist clung to their forehead, and oh it felt wonderful. They kicked, and a tiny rainbow rose from the splash.

"Ahhh!"

Hmmm?

"Goodness gracious, you surprised us!" said a voice. From where? The visitor turned their head rapidly, searching. From the shadow of a stone outcropping, a Rengosett unlike any the visitor had ever seen before emerged.

Despite the fact that they were underground, there was a strange, well-lit ambience to the place. Two enormous statues stood sentinel over the largest passageway. One of them, oddly, appeared to be made out of an entirely different sort of stone from the rest of the mountain.

Baffled but intrigued, the visitor asked the rengosett (she seemed to know what she was doing, after all) exactly where they were, and what was going on.

The rengosett explained: This place was the entrance to a vast series of caverns collectively known as the Sound Kingdom. They were a band of artisans, actors, and crafters of all sorts, and they lived underground in this odd little world for reasons that were--difficult to explain, Orichalcum said with a cut-in. Maree hushed her and continued. As of late, they were at war with another underground kingdom--just how many of these things did Evelon have, anyway?--called the Fury Kingdom.

With names like those, the visitor figured they couldn't be fighting over much. They kept their thoughts to themself as Maree explained that the Furies had murdered her son.

"If you wander down here," she said, "you'd best be on the lookout for these folks."

Flansburg had shown them to a place where they might head aboveground--somewhere in Lamenolai, he said. From the looks of things, they were in the middle of a park. The visitor tried to waltz as nonchalantly as possible out of the cave, and strolled along the park's pathways until they found the gate to the outside. They thought they saw something pass overhead, but it was out of eyesight before they could make it out.

The visitor shrugged. They figured asking questions wouldn't help anything. They followed the finger of the strange Chombones-man and went down the street, wondering exactly whom he had been.

Luckily, the boulevard running along the park was well-lit, and the visitor managed not to get any more lost. The visitor noticed a restaurant along the road. Well. They were hungry. And what better place to ask for directions?

The visitor got in line, in behind a woman whose gear suggested she was an off-duty police officer. In front of her, what appeared to be a completely ordinary human talked amicably with his friend, a large, blue Paragon with a broad, smiling face. And finally, there were two other Lucain girls... Or it looked like only a girl, but one had the presence of a large audience, all sitting in silent, awkward anticipation.

"Don't forget meee!" His voice was high and somewhat strained.

"Shouldn't you be training still?" She hung her head in exasperation.

The visitor agreed with her. It had been a long, long day.

"You can say that again." The visitor startled and looked around.

Well, the meal was lovely. And the stargazing hadn't been so bad either--even if the waiters had been a little peculiar. ...Directions. They turned around, ready to ask, but felt too embarrassed to turn back. Throwing their hands into their pockets, they shuffled down the street, the passing cars kicking scraps of trash up in front of their feet.

"Are you alright, darling? You look lost," a sweet female voice asked them. They looked up.

The visitor explained their situation. The woman went up-in-arms almost immediately. "But you must come stay with us! We can't let you stay out in the cold!"

The visitor wanted to point out that Barakka was rarely "cold"--but an enormous translucent hand seemed to well out of nowhere, and it dragged the visitor along to a lovely little house tucked away in a Lamenolaian neighborhood.

"We already have other visitors," Alek chuckled deeply. "We may as well..."

They bustled the visitor inside. From the dining room came a pair of "yo"s. "Hey mom. Hey dad," a young voice said.

They ran with the speed of the terrified ran. They ran until they nearly tripped over the signpost marking out the bus station.

They ran inside. And they never once looked back.
