Consequences of Loneliness [P, Fin]

The soft glow of the Sandshark's fins were the only light into the cavern tunnels that he meandered down. He knew that he was alone, or at least mostly, here. Few dared venture into the caves that no one returned from. The legends.... He was sure that he had some part in them. Many a thief had come looking for his 'hoard', only to either be devoured or sent back onto their way, unable to return to their homes.

Turning down a familiar way he took a moment to stretch in the larger way, scratching a wingtip against a well-worn rock. No one knew these caves like he did - no one ever would.

There was no need to even think about where his claws were taking him. Urdevyn knew these ways so well he didn't need sight to navigate. Which was likely a good thing, since his sight was failing. Old as he was, every sense aside from that was quite accurate including the detection of foreign magic.

Not having to think of where he was going left the old dragon's mind able to wander. It had been a long time since any others stepped foot this deep into the caves. Most were on the edges, looking for those dreaded things that staked the shadowed places. Surely they could not know he was the reason they dared not move farther into the caverns intricate system of tunnels. No, they dared not to bother him nor his hoard.

Pausing for just a few moments the old Paragon turned towards one of the more populated tunnels, listening to the chatter of the wary travelers. It was rather faint, they were close to the entrance and not wishing to tread any farther. Silly, squishy things. There was nothing here for them to obtain other than the wild creatures he allowed to remain here.

Enough of that - another turn and a slight squeeze into the darker recesses of the caverns brought him closer to home. The familiar warmth was not far and he relaxed a bit in the sandy floors, letting his claws drag through them.

The grand chamber itself might not seem like much to a 'worldly' Paragon. Large and carved by some ancient civilization or creature, smooth stone and a soft, warm sand floor. There was only one entrance in and out - just barely big enough for Urdevyn to fit himself through. This left plenty of room for smaller creatures to enter or exit, but not without his careful attention. The quiet recesses of this place left every small sound to echo, even an assassin's footsteps wouldn't be lost.

Shifting around slightly on the sands he ran a claw through his precious hoard. Every single piece of metal accounted for, the shine and the colors familiar, the sound they made as they tumbled against one another. It was the sweetest music to his ear. Curling against the pile he laid his head upon it and relaxed. How was this not bliss?

There could be more to his life, Urdevyn mused. There could always be more possessions, the usual kidnappings from nearby villages, razing of places that decided to ignore his wrath. He had always been quite a simple 'gon though, never needing much aside from the baubles he currently ran his claws through. Life had changed outside of the cave in resent times, technology advanced and left him not wanting to have anything to do with it.

The only thing he really could say he would enjoy would be company. Not the humans who came to this cave, but of someone more of his own intellect. Of a more ancient mindset - or at least, who understood why he wanted no technology to come into his claws.
