Alrighty, here's what I got:
Rufus never believed in paranormal beings; even as a child, he scoffed at the ghost stories told around the campfire, unafraid and unbelieving. Vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts - they couldn't possibly exist, not in a world where science and technology rule. For Rufus, if it couldn't be proved scientifically, then it simply did not exist.
Of course, this all changed after his run-in with death. He could never remember exactly what happened, but he did remember taking a short-cut through a cemetery on his way home from work at the lab, where he worked as an assistant to a rather great scientist. Until he heard the rapid footsteps and saw the silver flash of the metal blade, he had been unaware that he was being followed. By the time he turned, it was too late. His memories blur at this point, and he remembers nothing that happened, until waking.
Trapped in limbo, an ethereal being, he was unable to make contact with anyone, neither living nor dead. He was also unable to move more than a few feet from his body, which lay at an odd angle in a pool of blood. Wondering what he had done to deserve this, Rufus begged, pleading to all gods he had ever heard of but never believed, begged for his life to be returned to him or his soul to be put to rest.
It was at this point that Grim stepped in. A reaper clothed from head-to-toe in black, he offered Rufus a choice; he could either be put to rest, his soul extinguished, or he could have his life back, although Grim warned that it would never be the same for Rufus. Rufus was desperate to live, and so he chose his life. After all, how drastically could it be changed?
When Rufus regained consciousness, he was laying face-down in the graveyard with a splitting headache. Thinking that it had all been a dream, he went on his way, arriving at home and going to bed straight away. When he awoke, however, the first thing he saw was a ghost, floating by his bedroom window. Grim had given Rufus his life back, but had also left him with a curse: he was to find and free all earth-bound spirits, helping them finish their unfinished business and laying them to rest.
So now, the one who never believed in ghosts or spirits, is now the only one who can save them...if he chooses to do so, that is.
Ok, so I know it's not very original or anything, and I don't think the ending is my best, but I didn't really know how to end it...so yeah, that's my entry xD Sorry if it totally fails.
