Return to Jawan, the Sea City

Familial Obligation [P, Sarasweet]

Postby Mousen » 06/23/2013 6:18 PM

The theatre was quiet today, really the theatre was quiet everyday. Who visited a seaside town to go and see a play, after all? And who wanted to go and see a play while on holiday? They had their regulars, the artsy young enthusiasts, the snobbish folk from the posh side of town, and the bored elderly couples who stayed in B&Bs on the sea front. No, Jawan's little theatre had never been exactly popular but on a quiet evening it was almost enough to discourage the likes of Grim. Almost.

Still it was a fine evening and the night was still young, in fact, by his standards it had barely started. Eleven in the evening, still in costume, and with a bottle of something that either alcoholic or poisonous in hand. He headed out from the theatre and headed towards the high street. What in the world could possibly go wrong? The world was his scallop, or er, something. Maybe he'd get completely drunk and turn up late tomorrow just to spite Chester, he hated that. In fact, while he was at it he could find something nice and sharp to stab him with.

>> <<

Of course, if Grim had known where Chester was and what he was doing there it might have made him a little less gun-ho about attempted murder. Chester was currently stood on a flat roof a few streets away, hoping that the dizziness would subside soon. He did hate travelling like that, not only was it horribly cliché (and Chester really did hate those) it tended to make him light-headed too. Admittedly, travelling through shadows was superficially elegant but in reality... It was far too much trouble to bother with on large scale and it was certainly too much trouble to bother with where Grim was concerned. Part of him wondered why he was bothering at all, familial obligation, perhaps?

Hopefully he could just find this damn assassin soon and pay him (or her, he supposed) off. Alice wouldn't be happy if he let anything happen to their cousin, although goodness knows he deserved it.

((Sorry for taking forever to start this. Also the title is awful, couldn't think of anything else.))

Scarlet clicked her phone shut. sure it was the twenty first century filled with smartphones and such but she  didn’t have the time to bother with such things. She only used her phone for what it was made for and that was to talk with people, specifically her employers. She had been sent out by someone who wished that someone else would no longer be living. She asked no questions and in return for her service she was paid quite a sum of money. Though she never really needed it, she was a demon. she wasn’t born a demon but she sure was one now, full set of powers and could even visit hell if she liked. Not that she ever did, no one with the free will to travel ever went to that place.

Today Scarlet found herself in the sea-side city of jawan. Not the most desirable place, Scarlet hated water and preferred to stay out of its way. however she was repaying an old debt and scarlet wasn’t going to be in some mortals debt if she could help it. From what scarlet could tell she was in the sort of down-town area of the city. Only a few blocks away from a theater, dressed in her normal ‘human’ clothing. Her eyes scanned the roof tops searching them for any signs of trouble. She wasn’t often opposed when she went after someone but she was always careful not to let her guard down.

Chester kept to the shadows, from this angle he should be near-impossible to spot. Although, that really wasn't the point, there was nothing to be gained in being a casual observer. It had been a long time since he'd had to deal with anything like this, and with any luck he could pull it off without any fuss, now, wherever this assassin was they shouldn't be much longer... Ah! It took him a minute, and at first Chester had dismissed her, demons were normally very easy to pick out from a crowd however they looked, but her disguise was immaculate on every level. Had he not been looking, Chester wouldn't have noticed a thing.

Now for the tricky bit, one moment he was on the rooftop and the next he wasn't. He appeared at the side of the street, cursing the dizziness and hoping that no one else had noticed him. "Miss," he called quietly, walking over to where she stood. "Might I have a word with you? I fear I'm being somewhat imprudent, provoking a demon such as yourself, but I believe I have good reason. My name is Chester, and your quarry is currently wandering around the high street wondering where best to drown his sorrows. Not that he has many of those, mind you. ...What I'm trying to say is, there is no rush. Five minutes should make little difference to your plan."  He was a curious little figure, stood before her. Not even five foot high, dressed neatly with a penchant for the old-fashioned, although he looked distinctly ruffled now. His long black coat was buttoned up past his chin, despite it being a warm night, and a white mask covered the top half of his face. Chester was an odd one, certainly.

((This is a bit rambley. Sorry. It's late.))

Scarlet walked down the street mimicking the humans around her. she had a knack for blending in to her surroundings and it took a keen pair of eyes to spot her as a demon amongst the crowd. She didn’t expect any trouble in her mission, scarlet was rarely confronted and there weren’t usually guards protecting her target. So when she heard a voice addressing her scarlet jumped a little. She scolded herself for being too focused on her target and neglecting to check out what and who was around her.

Scarlet stopped walking and waited for the man to approach her. The man’s height and strange clothing was a little off-putting, but it hardly fazed her. Scarlet couldn’t say she ever got used to humans and their odd quirks but they didn’t shock her as much. Scarlet was faintly interested in what the face behind the mask looked like but was distracted from that when the man called her a demon. Scarlet couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow, not many could see her true form and those who could generally stayed away.

When this Chester fellow told her where her target could be located it took most of her will-power to stay put and hear the man out. Although she couldn’t help but glance in the direction she should be going. Scarlet contemplated the five minutes it would take to talk with him. She was wary of him leading her to a trap. Considering they only just met and it felt too scarlet that even though he was small he probably had something up his sleeve that could harm her. With a soft sigh she looked one last time towards her target. “Very well, five minutes.” she decided hoping she wouldn’t regret it. “I’m scarlet by the way.” she added, scarlet might be a demon but her time traveling she learned that it was usually better to be civil than rude.

Chester looked relieved, although it was difficult to tell beneath the mask and scarf. "It's wonderful to meet you, Miss Scarlet, although I can't help but wish the circumstances were less dire." He paused to gather his thoughts before continuing. With any luck, Scarlet was too level-headed to be the sort of person who shot the messenger. Still, one could never be too careful.

"You see, there are certain things your employer failed to mention, either intentionally or through ignorance. It is more likely to be the latter, but one cannot know for certain. However, I think it vital that you be made aware of these... things." Chester gave Scarlet a cursory glance, he still wasn't sure how she was going to take this. "The fact is, Grim is a demon much like yourself. I really doubt your employer paid you enough to dispose of one of your own kind, especially one that can be so... feral. I don't doubt your skills, but it bears thinking about, no?"

Chester stood up straight, even then his head didn't come up to the top of Scarlet's shoulder. "If you'd permit me, I would like to offer you a... compromise of sorts. Something that would benefit all parties, well, most of them."

((Appologies))

Scarlet waited patiently for the man to explain himself although she was only half listening. Her eyes strayed back towards where her target was said to be. She wasn’t usually so antsy, but she wasn’t usually pulled aside by a man who knew her true species. Scarlet refrained from telling the man to move on with his story, though she couldn’t help but tap her foot on the ground. She knew she was acting childish, but there were better things she could be doing with her time than listen to this man give her reasons to stop in her pursuit.

Hearing that her target was a demon did come to scarlet as a shock, and explained why this man knew she was a demon as well. The news wasn’t so much of a shock that she would have to kill her own kind, but that someone who looked like a free mortal would be so concerned. “It won’t be the first time I kill a demon.” Scarlet said with a simple shrug. “But may I ask, what is this demon to you?” The man didn’t look like a demon but scarlet knew first-hand that looks could be deceiving. So why did he feel the need to pull some assassin aside to try and put doubts in her head? Scarlet was interested in the compromise, maybe this man could offer her more money, scarlet could do with a new weapon.

Chester stared at his feet for a moment, as though a little bit reticent to tell Scarlet this piece of information. "Grim is... family, in the loosest sense of the word. There are others who... It wouldn't do to have him dead." You'd be surprised about the amount of effort it takes to rearrange a funeral, aside from that Alice was exceptionally fond of Grim (although for the life of him he couldn't understand why), and she'd never forgive him if she found out that he'd let it happen. He had enough relatives who hated him already.

"Well," Chester began, his brisk manner returning. "How much would it cost to cancel the contract? It is almost certainly bad business sense to say this, but, name your price. Also, it might be useful if, perhaps, you could discreetly get rid of your previous employer? I hate to do this, but he signed his own death warrant, really." The small, monochromatic man shrugged, he didn't seem to be bothered about the moral aspect of Scarlet's job.

Scarlet could only raise an eyebrow; this man looked like he held nothing but disdain for this demon. it made scarlet wonder who or what was making him try to stop her. Still, scarlet contemplated just going home, she hated to be out long without getting anything done and she was growing bored.  At least he had answered one of her questions; there was someone who was putting him up to intervening. considering he had said yes meant he was either over confident or had some crazy trick up his sleeve that could knock a demon on its butt.

The man looked to be lost in thought for a time before finally getting back to business. “Typically, I’d ask for enough money to make a rich man poor. After this talk however, I’ve lost interest in snapping your little friend’s neck.” Scarlet growled, unsure if she was frustrated that she wouldn’t get paid or if she was just getting paranoid about being around other people for so long. Today was definitely not her day and now it seemed that she wouldn’t be getting her new weapon either.

After a short pause and some thought scarlet didn't know why she had condemned herself to going home broke. “I will however take it upon myself to kill the one who hired me; no doubt he will hire someone else to kill your friend.” The man who had originally contacted her lived in a very lavish house with many expensive treasures, it wouldn’t hurt to kill him and steal his things. “Besides, if I get caught, I’ll just tell them you sent me.” Scarlet added with a smirk.

Chester allowed himself a small smile, mostly from relief. While he had been fairly confident that things were going to go in his favour, he hadn't been looking forward to the possibility of having to protect his cousin from an exceptionally powerful demon assassin. (God, the things he was willing to do for family.) "Thank you. I doubt my gratitude means much, but nontheless."

He paused, before adding, "I do have one thing, however, that you might find valuable." From the inside pocket of his coat he took out a small glass vial, it appeared to be filled with a sort of mist. "Here we have a finding spell, the strongest one I know of. I'm sure you can find some use for it." Alice had been practising with finding spells for years, as a witch she was practically useless, but she did have one talent. He held the vial out to Scarlet.

(Looks like we're almost done here, unless you wanted a plot twist of some description?)
