The Queen Mother of the First House is perhaps the most idiosyncratic member of the royal court. Often she is absent from her post entirely, away on some secret business of her own. Try as the court might to discern the nature of these trips, they remain inscrutable--- as does the Queen Mother herself. As beautiful as she is sharp-witted, Risse is sole survivor of six siblings, as well as a former exile brought back only when her siblings died in quick succession and she became the sole hope of preserving the family line. No one quite knows what to make of her, or how to act in her presence.
Outwardly, she appears to be playing the same game as everyone else. She is, after all, still a demon raised within the courts from childhood. But those in positions of similar power generally agree that the Queen Mother seems to have some agenda of her own, and her allegiance is an uncertain thing despite the best efforts of various factions.
What she means to do, if anything, remains to be seen. However, as of yet there is no sign that her allegiance belongs to anyone but her son, and that will have to satisfy any questions concerning her motives for now.
P E R S O N A L I T Y
Those who remember her from childhood knew her to be a spirited and headstrong child. Age, and the years she spent in the human world, saw fit to change that. Now she is more shrewd, more remote; in her youth she had merely emulated the lies and machinations of the demon courts as a player of the game, but now deception has become entrenched as part of her personality. There is no one she trusts, no one she will not use if it suits her.

Risse was the sixth-born child to the Demon King Vorren. With so many siblings between herself and the throne, Risse was given considerably more free reign than her siblings--- or perhaps to put it differently, she was more often considered an afterthought, and left to her own devices. This suited her perfectly well. Risse grew up indulging only in what interested her, disobeying her tutors and dismissing those attendants who tried too hard to restrict her freedom.
The only one whose ire she respected was her father's, and so she kept to those duties and obligations he expected of a princess of the First House, but as the youngest, even these were few and far between. The relationship between herself and her siblings was a frigid one, with one exception: the third-born, Prince Rulach, who was sympathetic to his youngest sister's plight. Though she did not heed him much more than she heeded anyone else, she remembers him fondly even now, and his company made any time she spent on decorum more bearable.
As she grew older, her adventures drew her increasingly away from the palace, out of the borders of the inner circle of the demon capital, where the Houses of the purest bloodlines resided. The slums in particular, with all their dark and crooked alleys hiding untold secrets, were a particular favorite. She made mistakes, at first, but none permanently damning, and in time she learned to navigate them much as a native might.
Eventually she ended up in a double life, spending the majority of her time as a field agent sent to the mortal realm to further the agenda of the Cursed Throne. It was a position generally occupied by the scions of lesser noble families, and by particularly strong and resourceful demons of no title. She had disguised herself as the latter, and for years she traveled with her partner, a younger demon named Qual, returning home only occasionally. Qual had been besotted with her, and while Risse did not return his feelings, she treasured him as she might a younger brother. She had thought they might carry on like this indefinitely. She certainly had no plans to the contrary.
She hadn't expected to fall in love.

At her core--- and this is the thing the courts do not know--- Risse merely wants to protect her children. But with her status, and the sinister nature of inheritance to the Cursed Throne, she must play a long game that she has little confidence of winning. If that is the price to pay, however, so be it. She has lost enough. For the sake of her children, she is willing to lose the rest, if that is what it comes to in the end.
