Almost large enough to be considered a theme park while remaining free to the public, Terrace Park is rumored to have been the site of the Grand Hollowheart's defeat, leading to the Hollowhearts first accepting a pact with humans. (+2 Fame, +2 Endurance)

A Birthday Picnic

Clara stretched tall as she rose out of bed. Her blue and silver hair tumbled messily over her frost blue tipped horns. She smiled to herself, it was her 18th birthday, and her friends were planning to throw her a party. It was suppose to be a secret of course, but Baron was never very good at keeping secrets from her. He clumsily let it slip that Tao was baking Clara's favorite cake, and that Terrace Park looked like a nice place to spend the day. Coincidence? No, she thought not.

She stepped out of bed, and walked over to the window looking out over the street below. Her apartment was on the third floor, and overlooked a roundabout were several roads connected within the city. Already, early in the morning, the city was alive and bustling. People walking their goods to market, holy men heading to their churches, and people just living their day to day life. Three years ago this was new to her, being a country girl at heart, but now it was normal.

She shrugged, and walked over to her dresser. It was likely to be just the three of them, she didn't have too many other friends here in town. She thought about the dress she had bought not long ago, but thought better of it. She would rather be comfortable on her birthday. She pulled out a pair of short jean shorts, and one of her favorite shirts. The gray shirt held the bright red symbol of her favorite band. It fit snugly over her top, but came up just a little short, showing a little of her belly.

She stretched again, then reached for her badge that marked her as a Paladin's Apprentice, and several pieces of gold ornamental jewelry. A beautiful golden bracelet with 12 bright blue gems fit around her wrist. Three silver chains, one with quiet bells wrapped around her ankle. A necklace with a golden starburst, and a bright ruby adorned her neck, and a cloth band with silver attached and layered to it wrapped around her left horn. With one more stretch and yawn, she was ready for the day. She put on her walking shoes, and walked out the door, on her way to Terrace Park to meet her friends.

Clara stopped outside her door, and wondered if it would be appropriate to bring her mace. The oversized weapon of war, made out of unbreakable metals and stone usually went with her everywhere. Her badge allowed it to be carried in the city, but it would ultimately be too much for a day of fun. She wouldn't be far from it anyway. The Great Mace Lethander would just have to sit here at home. She sighed, locked the door to her apartment, then ran down three flights of stairs, and out to the busy streets of the city.

The park was not that far from her home, so she made her way swiftly down the street and around the corner. There was a large market square just before the park. The smells of the farmer's produce were delightful. Fruits and veggies lined the road in stalls run by farmers. A restaurant  nearby was cooking up some delicious smelling fish. Her favorite was smoked salmon, and that appeared to be the special today. She was tempted to stop in for a bite, but no, her friends were likely waiting for her already. She sighed to herself and moved along.

She stepped into the park, out from the market, and took a deep breath of fresh air. The sun shined through the branches of the shady trees. The light danced on the grass below as the slight breeze swayed the branches of the trees. She could see the bright red of Baron's mane not far from where she stood. Tao setting plates and utensils. She also pulled a small cake from her basket, and set it on the table. Clara made her way to where they were sitting.

Tao was busy setting the table. It had to be perfect for Clara. The girl had been through so much on her behalf over the last year, she wanted to show her appreciation by making this her best birthday ever. Baron was delighted to be able to help. He had just finished wrapping his present for her, and was now setting the candles in the cake. The old paladin was pleased at his work, the 18 candles in the shape of a starburst on top of the round, golden flaked, chocolate cake was perfect.

Clara snuck around a grouping of bushes and approached their table from behind. Her target, Baron, Paladin of the goddess Yer. His accomplice, newly appointed high priestess Tao, was secondary. She slid behind the large tree nearest the table, no having been spotted yet. She could hear them talking clear as day.

"The cake is finished, and it's perfect!, said Baron

"That's marvelous, she should be here anytime.", said Tao, unknowingly setting up the perfect moment for Clara to leap from behind the tree.

"WHAT'S MARVELOUS?!", Clara bellowed.

Tao screeched and was 10 feet up the tree before you could blink. Baron jumped and fumbled when he tried to catch himself, nearly crushing his confectionery masterpiece. Clara fell to the floor rolling in laughter.

Tao cursed under her breath, something about brats and hellions. Baron was more lighthearted and simply laughed it off. Clara stood up and took a seat next to Baron, eyeing the cake. It was actually very impressive coming from a Paladin who spent most of his life in the field.

"Food is served!", said Tao. She had just finished the veggie dogs and burgers.

Baron was the first to receive his meal, it was huge. Several burgers piled on top of one another. Clara had no idea how he was going to eat all of it in one sitting. She herself took a smaller plate, with a small side of salad. The food was wonderful, Tao was an amazing cook.

"Blow out your candles! Make a wish!", said Tao. She was happy to see that Clara was having a good time.

"All right, before we delve into this delicious cake, I would like to give you your gift.", said Baron. He pulled out a very large, round, flat with a slight curvature, wrapped disk. It was wrapped in white and gold foil wrapping paper. From the shape of it, Clara could already tell what it was.

"Baron you didn't!", she yelled. She quickly unwrapped the present revealing a round shield with the order's symbol embellished on the front. It was beautiful, and it meant more to her than just having something to protect herself with.

"I did, and I am recommending you to the order for consideration of a promotion. It is my hope that you will accept, and take the final steps in becoming a Paladin.", Baron had been planning this for some time. He would have recommended her, birthday or no, but this was convenient way of presenting her with the honor, and making her birthday memorable.

"I accept! Of course I accept! Thank you Baron!... I mean thank you sir!" She saluted her officer in command with respect. Then let out "Squee!" sound as she hugged the shield.

She stood up and  put the shield in her main hand. She danced around the table fighting off imaginary enemies. She wished she hadn't left her mace at home. It would be nice to see how the new gear felt together with her weapon.

Overall this birthday was the best. They spent the rest of the day there in the park, reminiscing of there adventures together. She was happy to have friends that cared this much for her. She was happier so, that those friends were also her mentors and guides. She knew that the trials ahead to become a Paladin will be hard, but for now she's just a girl celebrating her birthday with her best friends. It was in fact her best birthday ever.
