He went limp with relief when his hands found the handle to the door. He wanted to throw it open, but didn't quite dare. There could be someone just outside, someone who would recognize him. Nudging it open, he peered out; he couldn't see much, but from what he could make out, he was alone. He waited there a moment, then two, then three. No one came. He couldn't hear anything either, except the hush-hush sound of the waves, and the occasional cry of a dog in the distance.

He tumbled out, meaning to make a run for it, but the sight of the sea stopped him at once. It was lit by the full and silver moon, hanging low over it like a bright pendant, casting a white streak on the dark waters.

He had seen the full moon before, and he had seen stars clearer than this, out near the castle and all its lights. He had just never seen it like this. The fresh, salt smell of it seemed stronger here too, somehow, even though he was only a few floors down, still at the top of the cliffs. He wandered, almost dreamily, to the grassy edge, staring out at the wide expanse. For a moment, he merely stood there, nothing more than a young boy entranced by the sea. The wind wove its fingers through his hair, cool but not cold, in the peaceful dry manner of a late spring breeze.

And then the footing beneath him shifted, and he fell with a yelp, down, down down into the waters below.

Once upon a time, there was a little prince who lived under the sea.

He had no mother or father, but he had three aunts who loved him very much. One was strict and sensible; one was loud and cheerful; and one was very colorful and strange. They didn't always agree on everything, but there was one thing they always told him.

"Now, remember, under absolutely no circumstances are you ever allowed to go up on land, do you understand?" Griselda drew a fishbone comb through his hair, clucking over the tangles. It wasn't very long, she'd complain; what was he doing that it had gotten so wild?

"Yes," said Priscilla, waltzing through the room. "Oh, it's not worth it, dear. All that walking, my goodness! And the sweating... And could you imagine only ever being able to traipse along the ocean floor like this?" She shimmied along the floor, her hips swaying in an exaggerated impression of a human's gait. Giggling to herself, she said, "It's much better here in the water, sweetheart."

"And humans!" said Griselda, tugging hard on an especially fierce tangle. The little prince bit back a cry. "Sorry, dear. But as I was saying, the humans absolutely cannot be trusted. You know what happens to us sea folk when they find us."

"No I don't," the little prince said, squirming away. He'd had quite enough of being brushed, nevermind what Griselda said about one hundred brushstrokes a day. He didn't want to grow out his hair anyway. "You never tell me. What happens when humans find us?"

"Oh," said Griselda, taken aback for a moment. She glanced at Priscilla, who glanced back. Neither of them said anything, which only made it more frustrating. The little prince pouted, his hands curling into fists.

"Ohoho! Our little peach dumpling wants to know all about the humans, does he?" Agatha peered in, accompanied by her eels, one around each arm and the rest fanning out around her like some strange cape. "He's growing up! Time sure does fly, doesn't it, sis?"

The clear waters of Nodia offered a grand view to those who chose to venture into the reefs. Colorful corals sprawled out for hundreds of meters in places. Little fish darted in and out, though most are quick to hide if anything should approach. A few larger fish swam through the waters with more boldness, however they had caught the attention of something... much larger. A small reef shark had been drawn in by the movement, and it advanced on a smaller fish with it's maw parted and teeth bared. But suddenly a strange black Celestial Mist rolled along the sea floor, moving straight for the shark. The predator quickly turned tail and fled to hunt prey in safer waters, and the mist vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.
