Well... that time of year again.
It felt like birthdays got more depressing every year. When he was a kid, birthdays were a big deal. There would be at least a month of hype, negotiating for gifts, picking out a cake and inviting all his friends, but the older he got, the less time anyone else had for that kind of nonsense. For the past five or six years, he wasn't even sure if anyone
remembered his birthday, let alone helped him celebrate. At least other people got well-wisher comments on their social media. He'd checked last Friday morning when his own big day rolled around, and sure enough, not a damn one. Figures. Birthdays were getting to be almost as depressing as Christmas. A few more years and he might not even remember his own, if things keep going the way they were going.
But rather than feeling bleak, this year he just felt angry. What the heck was he moping around for? It wasn't as if he
needed anyone else to have a good time. Yeah, what the heck, he was just going to have fun on his own. So, okay, technically it wasn't his birthday anymore next weekend, but he was going to buy an all-day theme park pass and ride roller coasters til he puked. Kill two birds with one stone, since he'd always wanted to go to the theme park. And even if it was dumb, he was going to buy his own gifts, because screw it.
Striding into the shop, he said, "I'm here to pick up a... uh." What did they have here, anyway? He squinted at the selection for a moment, before picking things out at random. "Let's see... Gimme a
Pisces Werebetta, Phage Hydrolisk, Tanuki Tali, and Industrial Draculi, I guess." Yeah, that sounded pretty good.
