While the waters close to the shore are tropical, Freighlei grows colder the further south you go. Very few areas are covered in ice, travelers are advised to watch out for icebergs. Because of the temperatures, the water is surprisingly clear! (+2 stat of choice)

The wind died down for just a moment before picking up again, but that was all Soriel needed to surge ahead and grab onto the life preserver. Mialarin breathed a sigh of relief, and began hauling in the rope.

She held out a hand to help Soriel back into the boat, and then her sister had rushed past her, shouting orders at Erisine and taking hold of the ropes. Mialarin spared a glance at the shore before she turned to join them, but all glimpse of land had disappeared. Her eyes widened. She hadn’t realized how fast they had been moving.

The ropes were mocking him, darting out and slicing right past his hands as he flailed about, hands closing on empty air. The boat was tilting, and that was downright terrifying and did not help his balance at all (He was used to him moving against the ground, not the other way around!). Then Soriel was by his side, shouting words at him that the wind scooped up and stole away before they could reach his ears, but she was pointing and gesturing, and when she was 7 that had played an elaborate game for weeks where they only communicated by hand gestures, so Erisine felt pretty confident when he ran (okay, quickly walked) up to the front of the boat and turned the wheel, steering them to the right.

The boat slowed, so he turned back towards Soriel to utter some words of triumph. She was messing with the sails, pulling ropes and shifting things, and he wasn’t entirely sure what she was doing, but undoubtedly it helped. She caught his gaze and her eyes widened in alarm.

“Keep-!”

Then a sudden gust of extra wind slammed into her, and she slipped, falling with a thud onto the hard wooden deck. Erisine heard Mia’s cry. They both jerked towards the middle of the boat, hands outstretched to help.

When he reached her, Soriel was already getting back up, one hand propped against the floor as she pushed herself up. He reached out a hand to grab her arm and help her up.

“Risi, wait! The boat!” she cried, eyes darting from him in front of her to the attendant-less wheel behind him.

“Are you okay, Soriel?” Mia cut in, soft purple eyes wide.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine, but the wheel!” Soriel shook off his hand and rushed towards the front.

He turned, and there it was. The iceberg. A tiny, tiny thing, its peak barely peeped over the edge of their boat. It must’ve been hidden by the waves when he had been at the wheel earlier; that’s how small it was. But they were in a dip in the waves, and still moving fast, and any unyielding object bigger than a grain of salt is still big enough to punch a hole in the side of their boat. Which this iceberg did, just as Soriel reached the wheel.
