It had been five years...
Major Katharine stood on the edge of Victory Point and cast her gaze out across the Ree'ne Sea. In the distance, her trained Magistrey soared across the sky, keen eyes searching every inch of coastline for threats. It had been five years since the Imperial's incision into Purine territory. Five years since both sides were forced to call a truce, no thanks to the Purine General's decision to bait the Imperial forces in and then raze the city to the ground.
The outcome had resulted in a period of peace.
As far as she knew, the Purines had praised Neruvire as a war hero for driving out the Imperials and Commander General Nelic focused her efforts on restoring war-torn parts of Barakka. Foundry and Starlight were never recovered, but neighboring towns were given support and trade routes were reestablished.
On the other side of things, the Imperials recalled their troops, declared Dalekke dead and installed Taima as the new Commanding General. Taima had been considered much more level headed than his predecessors, and the Major had to agree with that. Most of his time had been spent organizing relief and support for both Lambastians and Barakkans dealing with the fallout and devastation that superseded the war. While the media had actively condemned the Purine army, the new military swiftly had shut them down in an effort to preserve the peace.
Every year, a week-long festival took place on the shores of the Ree'ne Sea, on the closest points between the two continents. Boats ran between the two parties all week long and there was local music, drink and food shared between the two sides. In two days, that's when the next festival would start. That's why she was here.
While peace lasted, there were whispers among her superiors that some radical sects of the Purine Army resented the truce and believed that they should strike back. Her position, as head of Special Operations meant that she could not let those rumors past, so she'd put together a small task-force of like-minded volunteers to help her comb the coast and monitor Purine communications for any signs of rebellion.
Some of her superiors called her actions rash and unfounded, but that was her job. It had to be done.

Two days couldn't come quick enough. Rat huddled in the hold of the ship, forehead firmly pressed against his clammy knees and willed himself not to be sick, like that would help. Around him, were the soft moans of his peers, suffering from the same seasickness that he hadn't been able to shake for the last few hours. They'd left from a secluded port along the Sa'fir Coast and the plan was to carefully creep along the Barakkan Coast before cruising across the widest part of the and then wrapping around the Dead Coast towards the festival.
While the journey usually only took six hours in good weather, the Covenant Strait was to be avoided at all costs. The route would be experiencing the highest amount of traffic for the year, as a result of the festival and their leader didn't want to risk being seen. Not yet.
"Friends! Why are we wallowing in the dark?" A strong voice called out across the hold, and although it was still dark, Rat felt the urge to squint and raise an elbow to shield himself. The Lady had an infectious quality about her, like she brought the sun wherever she went. That's how she'd managed to accrue so many followers, he guessed. Like moths to a lamp. "Come, now is not the time for this. The sickness will pass, much like the sickness afflicting my Purine peers and this noxious Concordat." she demanded, her plate armor clinking as she crossed the floor.
Rat lifted his head out of his knees and blinked up at the woman before him. She was tall, taller than any woman he'd seen before and dressed up in ceremonial plate; silver, adorned with beautiful baby blue colored silk. Their insignia, a woman holding a sword in one hand and a scales in the other was stamped into her chest. Their emblem. Their pride. "Rise." She simply stated, offering a hand.
Rat reached out and grabbed the hand, allowing her to pull him to his feet. He wordlessly blinked back, stunned. He'd never seen their Lady Lauriel up close; her eyes were like star-fire, gold and ice blue and her hair was a flawless golden sheet, flowing out from under the silver sallet-style helm. Her expression though, was what drew the air from his lungs. She was... sheer wrath, in human form. "Your name, friend?" she asked, and the expression faded away into a pleasant smile.
"R-Rat. Ma'am." Rat mumbled under his breath, darting his eyes away immediately. Why was she looking at him? He was a nobody. His home in Foundry had been taken away from him by Imperials, and then the Purines refused to restore it. He was homeless, orphaned, alone. Nobody.
"Ah, and Rat, how do you feel? Has the sickness passed?" Her voice, sweet, like honey trickled into his internal monologue and soothed the dark thoughts. Rat nodded back, still unable to meet her eyes. Indeed, he felt much lighter, clearer. Was... it magic?
"Excellent." she commented, before turning to the rest of the hold with a dramatic sweep. "Friends. We are here because we believe the Red-Blue Concordat is wrong. Because we will not let the Imperial dogs walk over us and deny us our freedom. In two days we will arrive on the shores of Starlight Beach, where the Imperials will be holding their festival. There, we will cure our people from the Imperial corruption and free them from the chains that bind them. Who is with me?!"
She raised a clenched fist in the air. A roar erupted from the hold and Rat was not surprised to find himself among them.
